Publisher's summary

An absorbing tale of love, sacrifice, family ties, and magic, set in the Pacific Northwest in the aftermath of World War II, by the author of A Secret History of Witches.

Barrie Anne Blythe and her aunt Charlotte have always known that the other residents of their small coastal community find them peculiar - two women living alone on the outskirts of town. It is the price of concealing their strange and dangerous family secret.

But two events threaten to upend their lives forever. The first is the arrival of a mysterious abandoned baby with a hint of power like their own. The second is the sudden reappearance of Barrie Anne's long-lost husband - who is not quite the man she thought she married.

Together, Barrie Anne and Charlotte must decide how far they are willing to go to protect themselves - and the child they think of as their own - from suspicious neighbors, the government, and even their own family....

"Completely engrossing and hard to put down... I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical dramas about found families or women's fiction with a touch of the supernatural."—Bibliosanctum

Weakly entertaining.

I like that the story was set in the Pacific Northwest where I live but my excitement ends there. The title is a bit misleading if you are looking for a witchy tale. There is only mid reference to witchcraft until the very end. Having read (not listened to) A Secret History of Witches by the same author I was expecting more. If I had been reading this in print I think I might not have finished it. As it was, the reader's inflections didn't change much throughout the book, not exactly monotone, making it easy to lose focus while listening. Can't say it was bad but can't say it was very good either. Just mediocre.

instantly hooked!!!

This isnt the kind of book I would typically go for, but something about the pace of the story combined with the adventure and ease of listing had me hooked in moments. I was devastated when I realized the book came to an end before I was ready. Each character was well rounded and the emotions conveyed were easy to accept believe and feel. I highly reccomend this book! Even if it's not your usual interest!

One of the books within this book was good

There were 2 stories woven together and the main story is really good, so it was frustrating when it left the main story and went back in time for seemingly no reason. I kept wishing I could skip those parts but I was worried that I would miss something important. I didn't. So if you're like me and find their past boring, know that you can skip those parts without taking away from the main story.

I really enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book but I wanted/needed more details about Emma and the water magic. Part of me thought she was going to end up a mir-child but we never find out. Also, not sure how the title fits the story. I just kept waiting for more details. The story itself was great, detailing the way of life during the war and after and how life unfolded for the wife of a soldier that couldnt hang....like i said though- it just never fit the title.

Great Read! Was enthralled all the way!

So, I came across this book, thinking that it might not fully be something I might enjoy, but oh was I mistaken. This book kept me just having to continue, to see what was next, to the very end.

WHAT THE...

THE STORY'S ALRIGHT IN ITSELF HOW EVER, DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT JUMPS ALL OVER THE PLACE BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN TIMELINES. TOO CONFUSING IF GOING TO JUMP THEN LET US KNOW IF VISITING THE PAST IN THE MIDDLE OF A SCENE, USING A KEYWORD OR FRAZE LIKE WAS REMEMBERING OR REMEMBERED TO ACCOUNT FOR, THEWAY IT IS NOW IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH THE LISTEN

Love ❇️ love!

Love this book so much! The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that I finished it in 1 day and wished it was longer.

Kind Of -But not quite there

so this book held my attention and had some interesting moments but it also had moments that just quite frankly didn’t make sense. For instance they make such a big deal about the fact that we’re certain characters in the book are living is very isolated but then when someone shows up to take them out to dinner there’s never a mention of who they might even ask to watch the baby. The whole story surrounds this baby—-The fact is they should have somehow incorporated who they got to watch the child since they are so isolated on a peninsula things like that but me
