#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER •

A high-stakes thrill ride through the darkest corners of the Sunshine State, from the author hailed as “the best thriller writer alive” by Ken Follett

We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice.

But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens.

Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct. After nine years with the Board, she knows that most problems are caused by incompetence, not corruption.

But a corruption case eventually crosses her desk. A previously disbarred lawyer is back in business with a new identity. He now goes by the name Greg Myers, and he claims to know of a Florida judge who has stolen more money than all other crooked judges combined. And not just crooked judges in Florida. All judges, from all states, and throughout U.S. history.

What’s the source of the ill-gotten gains? It seems the judge was secretly involved with the construction of a large casino on Native American land. The Coast Mafia financed the casino and is now helping itself to a sizable skim of each month’s cash. The judge is getting a cut and looking the other way. It’s a sweet deal: Everyone is making money.

But now Greg wants to put a stop to it. His only client is a person who knows the truth and wants to blow the whistle and collect millions under Florida law. Greg files a complaint with the Board on Judicial Conduct, and the case is assigned to Lacy Stoltz, who immediately suspects that this one could be dangerous.

Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else.

The reader ruins the book!

What did you like best about The Whistler? What did you like least?

I haven't finished it yet, because I can't continue to listen to the reader

Would you be willing to try another book from John Grisham? Why or why not?

Of course, but only if there is another reader.

Would you be willing to try another one of Cassandra Campbell’s performances?

Never

Was The Whistler worth the listening time?

No, she made my ears bleed.

Vocal fry!!!

I always enjoy scott thurow's stories. The narration was distracting. I know it is hard for a woman to imitate a man's voice and wish they wouldn't even try. It was continuous annoying vocal fry. The southern accents were also unconvincing. Just read the damned book!

Good But Not One of His Best

Fun but nowhere as great as the usual John Grisham. Just wasn't as thrilling and hard to put down as usual. Good Reader.

A great story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a twisted trail of he said, she said with corpses left along the way. I sincerely hope Mr. Grisham continues more stories about these folks who investigate judges. I especially enjoyed the narration by Cassandra Campbell. She is very good at story telling.

took 4 attempts

I love John Grisham. I did not like the narrator for this book. Way to breathy, Marilyn Monroe style. I finally made it through the book by turning the speed up to 1.5. I'll make a note of this artist and choose carefully. Hope she isn't reading Camino Island

Slow Start

Unlike other Grisham suspense novels, this one really started out slowly. but once it gets going, it is a great listen.

The Whistler

This is a thriller in true Grisham style. At times it was confusing because of all the tentacles in the story, but it comes together in the end, Enjoyed reading this book.

Unique story

The reading performance was pretty bad, but the plot was classic Grisham, genius and original. It had lots of layers and tied together well at the end.

Whistler not that bad

Granted, this is not Grisham's beat or lost interesting book, but it was nonetheless interesting. The story, while easily understood, suffers from the rather incredible involvement in the small state agency's attempting to take the lead in investigating a judge who was suspected of being involved with organized crime. I disagree with reviewers who lay blame for a weak book on the narrator. She didn't write it. And, the book was told from Lacy's perspective, so the choice of Ms Campbell makes sense.
