Publisher's Summary

Such a pretty face....

So young, so sweet. She appeared out of nowhere, in the middle of traffic, on a busy day. A teenager with no past, no family - no memories.

Such a lovely child....

So blond and beautiful. Carol and Paul were drawn to her – she was the child they’d never had. A dream come true. And then Carol’s nightmares began – the ghastly sounds in the night…the bloody face in the mirror…the razor-sharp ax.

Such a relentless evil....

So deceptively innocent. Most mothers would die for such a darling little angel. And that’s what frightened Carol most of all.

Great story. Poor narration

How does a great book and fantastic writer get a poor rating? Hire an inexperienced narrator. The inflections in Natalie Ross's voice while telling this great story make it difficult to concentrate on anything except the cadence…like she is short of breath. I am going back to hardcover on this one.

Sorry Mr. Koontz. I love your body of work. I have been listening to and have been reading your books for years. I have never had a bad experience until now.

Awful narrator

I downloaded the book to my I-touch and tried to listen to it in my car, as usual. The voice of the narrator is so bad that both my wife and I could not understand more than 2 of every 3 words she read. Not possible to listen to it in the car. Full volume did not help. So I tried it at home in a very quiet environment, on a very good stereo. Same result. This is the worst reading of a book that I have ever had the experience to try listening to. I have no idea if the story is any good, because I can't hear it. Very frustrating! Total waste of money. All the other books I have ever downloaded from Audible have turned out just fine, so I know it is not just my issue.

Typically great DK

excellent story, and great narration! I noticed the criticism stated the narrator was lacking in some way. I obviously don't agree.

Great until the conclusion...

Great story, lots of tension and suspense, then a highly unsatisfactory resolution at the end! Good narration, though.

typical older koontz, great but to much sex

way to much and to graphic sex in this. otherwise a great book. Like most of his books the older the book the more graphic the sex and more bad language.

Narrator ruined this story

Koontz supernatural suspense was lost by a narrator who couldn't bring any aspect of this story to life. She had to slow her recording down so much to make a male sounding voice that her male characters sounded like they had been tranquilized.

Great but hard to hear.

Great story and great leader. I had a lot of trouble hearing unless I had on headphones though. I think it was actually the recording studio, but I managed to get most of what the lady said and put it together.

It's Koontz

Very interesting story with a few twists, excellent writing by Koontz with characters well developed. The ending, as is true with a lot of books, seems to lack finality. It seems as a lot of writers are able to fully develope a story and get lost as to how to end a story. I always enjoy reading (and listening) to Dean Koontz. Natalie Ross has done an excellent job with characters.

Intense

I think I've read every one of Dean Koontz' books except this one. As far as writing goes, he is right up there with his best books. It was quite riveting. We lost our daughter a few years ago and I just could not finish the book. I;m sure that those who read the entire book will find it to be everything they expected.

Very good... Just too short!

I am becoming very fond of this author having now read a small selection of his previous work, this being my fourth I think.

This book is very good, I wont go into any detail, as i have a habbit of accidently giving things away. Anyway, the only reason this book got 4 stars as opossed to 5 as I found it was too short. I would of enjoyed the story to continue longer, as well with the ending i would of liked to been able to explore that more as opossed to the slightly abrupt ending that was given here. Which I suppose in a sense is a credit to the author as I did not want the story to end.

As with all his books, the characters are fantastic and truely likeable and he has the ability to make the us the readers feel really intune and 'want' to follow these characters wherever they may go!! Super read.

An entertaining listen

The story is entertaining despite being fairly predictable. There are some humorous exchanges but this is 'straighter' than the style seen in Koontz's other works like Odd Thomas and Life Expectancy.

It's genuinely creepy at parts and well-paced, keeping up the tension throughout.

I really liked Natalie Ross's reading, she has a lovely voice that I could listen to all day and she does a great job with the different character's voices, both male and female.

I was disappointed in the ending which left questions unanswered and was very abrupt, but I would listen again.

Mask unmasked

The story is good, as is the reading. There were times when there was too much detail but I enjoyed the book.
It is definitely not one of his best, but enjoyable nonetheless.
