The elk emerged from the burning trees and stopped on the ridge above him. Its coat was scorched black and its antlers flamed like a torch. It stood there staring down at him and he felt like a pagan summoned before some ancient deity or devil from a world beyond. He slowly raised his camera and took its picture. Then, suddenly, it was gone, as if it never had been. But Connor knew it was an omen, though of what, as yet he had no idea.

my favorite

I remember reading this book when I was 18 & now a being 33. I remember why I enjoy this book so much. I've read many book, but something about Evans book makes it bring to life.

Good story, needs a new title

A decent story, exciting at times, a little dull at others. I bought the book because of it's title and my interest in fire fighting. I was disappointed to find that the bulk of the book did not make reference to this. A more recurring theme throughout the book is photography, disappointment and the supression of emotions. Perhaps it should have been titled "The heart broken photographer"

Not only was the story enthralling, but Eric Conger narrates this into greatness! loved every minute of it!

Best book so far!

This book was recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a wonderful story.
