Dellaria Wells, petty con artist, occasional thief, and partly educated fire witch, is behind on her rent in the city of Leiscourt - again. Then she sees a “wanted” sign seeking Female Persons, of Martial or Magical ability, to guard a Lady of some Importance prior to the celebration of her Marriage. Delly fast-talks her way into the job and joins a team of highly peculiar women tasked with protecting their wealthy charge from unknown assassins.

Delly quickly sets her sights on one of her companions, the confident and well-bred Winn Cynallum. The job looks like nothing but romance and easy money until things take a deadly (and undead) turn. With the help of a bird-loving necromancer, a shapeshifting schoolgirl, and an ill-tempered reanimated mouse named Buttons, Delly and Winn are determined to get the best of an adversary who wields a twisted magic and has friends in the highest of places.

I've only gotten an hour in so far. The story here seeks promising, and the narrator does a great job. But I have the distinct feeling that I'm missing information about the world. There was no indication that this book was part of a series. However, I'm tempted to see if the other book by this author might have been the first, and they just haven't been categorized as such.

A somewhat unclear beginning.

I had no idea what to expect from this book when I got it except it sounded interesting and it's one of my favorites I've listened to in a really long time The story is fun and engaging the dialogue is absolutely phenomenal The writing is good there's just nothing bad to say about it whatsoever

some of the best dialogue I've heard since I don't know when

A prime example of characterization through narrative voice. I actually laughed out loud once or twice a chapter just at the phrasing choices of the narration. It perfectly represented the absolute chaotic disaster that is the main character, and I loved every moment of it. The story is also really quite good, and pretty well defied my expectations.

If the weird, prosaic writing is throwing you off, just give it a chance to grow on you. It's worth it.

Delightful writing, excellent story

This was absolutely addicting and engaging. The writing was fantastic and the story was amazing. I look forward to more from this author who has made it to my top 10 authors.

Loved it!

found out it was a sequel after.
Missed opertunities with all magic in this book,
that's to say all the users and just basic actions. it's all soft magic but with no sense of wonder for it. Troll lady was just punch and gun. There was like 3 instances of combative magic in book that was sold as with body gaurds. These
occasions were also so brief!

But if there no magic, maybe we'll be getting cons? Nope! con artist gives Dely too much, her playing a game is probably the most con thing she does. The other con that book wants you to look at is her swooning of a lady, not great. Maybe she's just smart? The group turns to her as a leader afterall. Nope, a breaking bad pivot to reach the goal of finding someone is so shit.

The UHaulers were the more amusing part but dude this old timey english killed me! STOP SAYING RHETORICAL WHATS AT THE END OF EVERYTHING SENTENCE. What?

The pitch also sells this as a conspiracy or a grander plot, it's not. The "friends in highest of places" doesn't seem apt at all.

The mouse, in this story felt so out of place, like why? how? cuz the mouse still had flesh. but yeah a failed attempt to give more grandeur to everything else, maybe related to something from book 1 who knows.

UHaulers & breaking bad Not great

What a great fantasy romp! Loved this low stakes adventure with some lovely romance woven through. And the performance is absolutely captivating!

Wonderful Adventure

fun adventure story.. I didn't quite expect such a broad use of f bombs ..but it worked.. and the love story behind it all was sweet.. wasn't expecting the queer bend to the story but found it wonderfully entertaining

not what I was expecting

As a suggestion it might be helpful to put in the description that this is a second book in a series. I hadn’t realize that until I had read a review after I had already finished the book. With that being said the story is very well written and does standalone as a book. I found it to be very descriptive it does goes into a good amount of detail. So though I did start with this book it was easy to follow along without feeling as though I was missing out on something. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot as well as the characters. I did however feel that some of the characters were kind of flat, perhaps in the first book there was a little more character building upon introduction of some of the characters. With that being said I felt that it was a great story and I do highly suggest it.

This book is a second in a series

I deeply enjoyed this audiobook. Give it a chapter or two to figure out the accents and lingo, and you are off and running on a wild adventure. The whole setting feels Anglo-Victorian, while also breaking into enough fantastical elements and unusual cultural inventions to keep things interesting. There are some dark themes (violence, death, typical fantasy-adventure risk), but overall, the audiobook was fast-paced, exciting, and delightful. I will likely go back and listen to the first book, as I didn't know it existed - and I also didn't seem to miss anything in this narrative without it.

An Intense Magical Romp

The characters are good, my favorites are Deli, Whin (Win?), and Buttons. The story feels realistic, like the author really experienced many of the things that happened to Deli. This story feels like a story written by an author who had a neglectful mother, who grew up poor and later experienced what it was like to be rich, and who maybe experienced a a huge house fire. The voice acting was something to get used to. The constantly shifting accent annoyed me before I realized it was a character trait and I had to play at 1.1 speed. For unrelated reasons, I like the sene where all the fancy, rich people are like “Is it blood?” “No, I think it’s some kind of chemical?” Then Deli’s like “yup, that’s drugs”. The core of the story is the romance between Deli and Whin but, the climax is more about the mystery. Which is a shame because the romance arc is really what the story is about. Regardless, I love the ship, it’s adorable and gay! No longer must I ship lesbian couples in vain! (I found this story by, in a fit of frustration, searching gay fantasy lol) Why does everyone hate Buttons!? He’s literally a dead alive mouse!! I love Buttons! Buttons is the best!! Zero stars for the Buttons hate.

Story gay, me happy
