Story
Young wizards coming of age in a time of war... Will they be ready? Eynon was excited to leave his village and set off on his wander year. He’d turned sixteen today, and hoped for at least a few adventures. At high noon, he arrived a crossroads and saw a shimmer of silver in the mud. It was a thin and dirty oval, about the size of his palm. He washed it with squirts of water from his goatskin, then marveled at what was revealed.

Publisher's Summary
Ben Greenwood is continuing his apprenticeship at the Royal Institute of Magic, hoping things will be slightly less complicated now that he has advanced to the second grade.
Fat chance.
Coupled with the sterner challenges that the second grade brings, there is also the small matter of the impending dark elf invasion, making life at the Institute even busier than usual. Ben is the only one who can stop them, by finding Elizabeth's armor and its Guardians.
Ben has retrieved one piece of the armor - the boots - but the rest remain hidden. He has just one clue, which could lead to Elizabeth's helm: an old black and white photo given to him by the Master of Apprentices.
Ben must split his time between his apprenticeship and searching for the helm, before the dark elves strike and all hell breaks loose.

Finally comparable to Harry Potter
If you could sum up The Protectors in three words, what would they be?
Way too good!
Who was your favorite character and why?
The entire cast
What does Peter Kenny bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He adds a richness that was missing when I read it myself.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was very hard to wait for the next book when I’d finished the previous. My heart was definitely warmed and there were many laugh out loud moments.
Any additional comments?
Since Harry Potter, every young adult sci fi title says they are comparable to J.K Rowlings creations. This series finally makes this claim a real one. Maybe I didn’t become as entrance as I had been by my Harry but it was really close. Anyone who is searching for their fix, will be satisfied with this series. I Loved It! The world is definitely a better place because this series exists and a sadder place because there will never be anymore from this really gifted author.

okay, I give up.
If you are an adult who tends to enjoy YA fantasies this book is not for you. The premise is great but the story telling is quite poor. there is no logic or consistancy in the behaviors of any of the characters. it's so bad it pulled me out of the story. I don't have a problem with all the cliche stereotypes all the characters fall into, but it is so poorly done. Charlie, the nerd of the trio, is so whiney about so much that he is scared of but every now and then he is randomly fearless in a way that makes no sense. Natalie has no depth at all, she is just pretty and athletic and graceful. But so pretty. Just pretty. you can tell straightaway a man wrote this book. the author starts off building an interesting magical world, but ruins things by not having any consistancy of where things are located or how things work. there are conflicting situations with how the magical community and the real world interact. Worse yet, Queen Elizabeth is made to sound like she conquered the magical world and yet we are supposed to think she had the right way of it? I don't think this author has a very good emotional awareness based on the actions of his characters. I'm returning these books. so disappointing.

I was there until the second heroine...
I was there until the second heroine was also incredibly petite, gorgeous, and frail looking. So a hero can be chubby and awkward but a heroine can’t be? So over these delicate flowers who are amazing dynamos beneath but also irrationally emotional at the most bizarre times. It fantasy. So let me imagine the chunky girl is adored and considered beautiful and a heroine. The petite waif being drooled over and cosseted is a pretty stark reality.
