New version vs old version

I really loved this story. I first bought the book and read it, then ended up buying the audiobook twice. First on a cd and then on MP3 format. The original version is read by R.C. Bray and I have to tell you he does a much better job than Wheaton.
Wheaton reading is more akin to a professor delivering a lesson. All the characters sound alike. There is hardly no difference between men or female voices. If you don't pay attention you might miss the switch in dialogue between characters because they all sound the same.
I'll finish listening to this audiobook because I bought it, but any further listening will be from the original version i have on MP3.

Bray vs Wheaton

I loved wheaton’s ready player one, and figured I’d try his rendition of the Martian. Strong effort, but he doesn’t quite have the range of character voices needed for the book. Sure, initially I thought maybe he was just avoiding doing accents or something, but it started to become difficult to distinguish characters. I think I almost reflexively would hear RC Bray so I could keep them straight.

Great book, great movie!

I really enjoyed the movie. When I saw this as the daily deal I grabbed it. Books are great because they go into so much detail. I'm a little more than half way through this Audiobook and cannot wait to finish. Will Wheaton has done a great job at narrating. I know that this will be an Audiobook that I will listen to several times.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I originally read the paper novel when it came out and then saw the movie. This audio book was equally enjoyable and the performance was great.

It Was About Money

According to a social media post from R. C. Bray, Audible bought the audiobook rights (off Podium), but not the rights to Bray's previously published recording. Audible evidently invited Bray to re-record it, and he was keen to, but they couldn't agree on a price. So Audible got Wil Wheaton to do it. Weaton does a reasonable job and I did find his alternate phrasings interesting at times, but Bray's was far superior.

Maybe they'll reach an agreement and get Bray back to re-record it sometime.

In the meantime, if you are getting The Martian audiobook for the first time, get the R. C. Bray one, if you can (you might find it on CD).

A phenomenal narration for an incredible book

I have to admit, I own the original version of this audio book, narrated by R.C. Bray, but once I saw the release of the Wil Wheaton version, I knew I had to buy it. While R.C. Bray did an excellent job with the narration, Wil Wheaton absolutely knocks it out of the park. Like he did with his narration of Ready Player One (which is arguably my favorite audio book), Wheaton adds so much character and life to the novel, making it a quick and entertaining listen, even when it gets to the science-heavy passages. The book itself is so smart, funny and heartfelt- I would date it if I could! I can't recommend this version of The Martian enough, so what are you waiting for- give it a listen!

Another great version of this amazing book

Elephant in the room first: Wil Wheaton is not RC Bray. Bray is a narration god and his version of this book is among the best and most popular audiobooks ever recorded. I'm not holding Wheaton to these superhuman standards.

Taken on its own, Wheaton's reading of The Martian is fantastic. If I could, I would dock him 1/2 a star on narration based on some of the dialog where the voices weren't quite distinct enough, resulting in occasional confusion as to who was speaking. But he definitely captures all the right tones. Also, his Mark Watney is nearly as good as Matt Damon's.

I really enjoyed listening to this book again and this narration gave a fresh take on this astounding novel.
