Excellent short stories

The performances are something you can't really describe. The writing and performance continue to be great, as they were with Artemis. I found myself listening to chapters again it was so engrossing.

Nice Break !

Interesting stories, makes you think. Nice change from full length books during commute. If you like stories with a twist, you can't go wrong with this collection...just don't use a credit...trade a day of "cuppa Joe" $ for this and save your credit for the long ones !

MASTERFUL...

Some simply excellent shorts here... Whimsy, suspense, sensitivity, provocative speculation, and gotchas galore... You'll think you know what's going on, or going to happen, and BANG, you're wrong;). Mostly, it's a magnificent display of craftsmanship in the storyteller's art... I loved the Martian, and not so patiently wait for the upcoming Artemus, and only more so after finishing this... However, the price is a bit steep even when getting member discount given the very short length unless you're a diehard devotee... Many others will probably want to wait for sale, or read E edition...

What a wonderful journey!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Egg and Other Stories to be better than the print version?

I am honestly not sure as I only listened to the audible edition. However, that said, the narrators who produced these stories did a fantastic job and definitely drew me in to each short!

What did you like best about this story?

The twists that Mr. Weir brought about with each story. Each story had me anticipating and trying to guess at how the primary tale would shift.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accentuation of the various tones each story brings about. For example, the emphasis of God's words in "The Egg" really adds another level of complexity to each story that I would have otherwise lost had I just read them.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed at just about every story and found myself really introspective at the end of "The Egg"

Nothing not to like except too short!

These were great short stories and are ideal for a quick "listen". My only complaint was I wanted more!

A broader selection of Andy Weir's fiction

This is a varied collection of short stories from Andy Weir. They range from hard sf to much softer and fuzzier fantastic fiction. Not all of the narrators are reliable; one narrator isn't who we think they are. Some of these stories work much better for me than others, but overall this is an enjoyable and satisfying collection.

It's an enjoyable way to spend an hour or so of your time.

I bought this audiobook.

Ehh, not his best

I'm not exactly great at guessing plot twists, but these stories weren't exactly tricky, or very enjoyable. If you try too hard to be tricky, you end up with groans. I was bummed, but not everything can be Martian great.

Funny and thought provoking.

There are 9 short stories in this collection. As they vary in length between 3 and 14 minutes, there’s no time for flowery descriptions. We jump right in there and meet the protagonists, there’s a whip crack as the plot escalates, then a twist in the tale and it’s over. You stand smiling with eyebrows raised, on the other side of the story, bemused that it’s over so soon.

A couple of tales have the classic ‘bait and switch’ ‘it’s not what you thought it was’ type ending (don’t worry, no spoilers here) and that’s always good for a shocker ending if done well, which this is. The rest are more thought provoking, and the scope of the ideas continues to expand beyond the story’s end. You’ll find yourself thinking about them later.

As other reviewers have noted, at just over an hour in total, it’s a very short listen. But don’t let that deter you. The content is carefully distilled, so every word is to be savoured. Highly recommended.

Really not that good.

The narrators, while good, are exactly the sort of voices you might expect in a twilight-zone-esque novel and as such often feel parody like when they are not meant to.

The stories themselves are nothing special either. Once you realise (spoiler) that they are mostly twist endings you can see the twist coming easily. e.g. A story about a nurse, you're meant to think it's a woman, turns out it's a man!!! Really, some of the twists are so weak and such an obvious progression of the beginning of the story that I wouldn't even call them twists.

If you've got a teenager whose high on something asking for an audiobook that'll make them go "Woaaahhhh. That's deep/freaky." then you're golden with this, otherwise I'd give it a miss. Shame, as I really enjoyed The Martian.

In the great tradition of short stories

Tasty, satisfying, a little short, yet, in the honorable tradition of science fiction and the lot of stories. Worth the credit, even though it is nowhere near the length I hoped for.

Lots of nice short stories, get through it fast

Great for a medium length car journey. You can start and finish it with many people and they're easy to keep track of. They were all nice with some twists, some easy to see coming, some not.

Great stories but very short duration.

The stories involved are short but with great unexpected twists at the end of each story. Unlike other audiobooks this lasts under a couple of hours and is finished way too soon.
