Publisher's summary

The new novel in master storyteller Conn Iggulden's bestselling series tells the story of Pericles amid the battlefields of the Peloponnesian War.

After the gods, after the myths and legends, came the world of men—and in the front rank stood Pericles.

Enter Pericles—the Lion of Athens. Behind him lies the greatest city of the ancient world. Before him stands the ferocious Persian army. Both sides are spoiling for war.

But Pericles knows one thing: to fight a war you must first win the peace.

It’s time for a hero to rise. For his enemies to tremble. And for a city to shine like a beacon . . .

Great historical fiction

Conn Iggulden never disappoints. His storyline combined with historical accuracy makes for a good read/listen.

Questionable Narration

I enjoy the narrator of the previous 2 books more.. My main criticism with this narrator is the voice of Pericles which is indicative of a weak, confused & hapless boy.

13 conn books down and glad to keep reading.

Good as usual but more lulls than some of his other books. I love the way he brings real world heroes to life.

I loved this story

Every bit of it. Although I had read about Athens and Sparta, Conn makes it a book full of “real life” feeling.

Fantastic and Entertaining

Conn Iggulden does it again! I couldn't put this one down. He builds really well on the previous books in the series and develops the story very well. This book draws you into the timeframe and makes you a part od the story. Fantastic read!

Author loves to write about dogs dying

This author loves to write about pet dogs dying. So if you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll love this book!

Love Iggulden but disappointed with this book

I have read most of Igguldens books and loved them . But not this one . The historical story is completely overshadowed by the petulant whinings of a spoiled teenager. I just couldn't finish it , barely made it halfway .

The Whiny Whelp

Unfortunately, if you enjoyed the first two Athenian novels, then you're going to be disappointed in The Lion.
Pericles is insecure and obnoxious, and the new narrator gives him the voice of a whiny, petulant child. Annoying. Also, the story isn't interesting or entertaining. I gave it five hours, then gave up.
