Tim Rackley, a deputy U.S. marshal, watches helplessly as his daughter's killer walks free on a legal technicality. He is suddenly forced to explore his own deadly options, a quest that leads him into the welcoming fold of "The Commission".

A vigilante group made up of people like himself, relentless streetwise operators who have each lost a loved one to violent crime, the Commission confronts the failings of a system that sets predators loose to hunt again, cleaning up society's "mistakes" covertly, efficiently, and permanently. But Rackley soon discovers that playing God is a fearsome task. When his new secret life starts coming unwound at an alarming speed, he is suddenly caught in the most terrifying struggle he has ever faced, a desperate battle to save everything left that's worth fighting for.

Never would have got this had I known it was abridged! I was so confused as to why it was written so choppy!

I can’t see where it says “abridged!”

The overall story and storyline were good, and it’s clear this was one of Greg’s early novels. Still, the storyline matched the timeline for the story. Many stories mess that up by using something that was not part of that timeframe, or hadn’t even existed yet. Also, this was more of a cop story that also drew upon some military training, but didn’t go overboard, which is a good thing. The one complaint I have is that the narrator could have been better at his job. A lot of the characters had similar or identical voices for other characters. You don’t need to change your voice when narrating. It’s better to use a slightly different tone, or inflection instead of a change of voice because then the voices for all the characters begin to blend in together. Then the listener can’t separate them and can’t follow who’s talking. The narrator didn’t do a bad job, but I graded it as a C+. So that lowered the overall review score. I’ll still recommend this audiobook to anyone who like the author, or into crime and mystery.

Great story!

The brutal murder of their 7 year old daughter leads to the father's resignation of his career as a Deputy Marshall. The father then joins a group who claims to play "judge, jury, and executioner" when the justice system fails to do so. Only, he finds out more

It's good, but not his best (the others will blow you away). His novels get better as he writes. I like the Evan Smoak serious 5x more- those are take your breathe away good.

The narrator has FANTASTIC voices= it's shocking how different some of the voices/accents/annunciations are. very good narrator.

If you like 007/CIA type of action... you'll like this.

loss of a child/vigilante justice

I’m a big fan of Gregg Hurwitz but this book didn’t do much for me. One and done for this series. I’ll skip the rest.

Just ok

The story is a parent's nightmare and a story of restraint and a search for the truth. I have yet to come upon a Hurwitz book I didn't like and he stays at the top of my favorite author lists.

The thing that WOW'd me was Peter Friedman. He has a most amazing range. Hard to believe he can shift his voice the way he does and for so many characters. I'm hooked on author and narrator now.

Boy Howdy!
