In the next book in this New York Times best-selling series, Evan Smoak takes on his most complex mission yet―one where he not only has to protect but also avenge, and find a way to balance vengeance with mercy.

Once a black ops assassin for the government known as Orphan X, Evan Smoak broke with the program and went deep underground, using his operational rules and skills to help the truly desperate with nowhere else to turn.

When Luke Devine, one of the most powerful men in the world, has a psychological crisis, Evan flies to the East Coast to help him. While there, he learns of a young woman who was kidnapped off the New York City subway, clearly in danger and in need of aid. With no name and few clues, Evan and his team track down the missing woman, who was assaulted and abandoned. Evan offers his help―and sets out finding the young men responsible. But the woman insists that Evan abandon his usual methods―no vengeance and, in particular, no killing. Which will prove no easy feat given the mounting incoming threats from all sides. In a mission that takes Evan from coast to coast, from the poorest corners of society to the richest, Orphan X must figure out a way to protect the innocent, avenge the victimized, and balance justice with a measure of mercy.

The author returned to what made this series so good! I felt like the last few books weren’t up to the standard that he set in the first five books. This one met and maybe exceeded my expectations!!

This is one of the best in this series!!

It’s not bad. It’s also not my favorite by a long shot. I’m a big fan of the series, and this one felt a bit stale. Mostly because the last book was so heavy with conflict. X VS. Tommy for complex reasons that keep you super invested. I get why this one is was written and postured the way it was, it’s just…I don’t know it’s still a book series and I wanted a continuation to the conflict from the last book, not Evan having to reconcile with what he lacks in humanity. I always looked at it like his disconnection from “normality” because of being plucked out of an orphanage and chosen as part of the orphan program, then getting out to serve people in his way was the balance. It was ok. I just didn’t love this one.

It’s different.

As good as it gets with Evan Smoak/Nowherr Man/Orphan X. How can you say which book in the series is better? They’re all necessary to build this amazing character that Hurwitz has given to the world. If you’re new to Orpan X, do yourself a huge favor and give yourself a gift and start at the beginning.

Superbly SUPER!

ES is finally correlating human emotions to situations versus just killing and has agreed to bring Joey on a JOB! Would love to see her character continue to develop emotionally and in her skills. Candy always bring in the minx mode that is necessary to solidify ES need for a woman such as himself. Leaning and processing emotive responses. Would recommend

Awesome series!

I disliked that I got through the book too fast! I didn’t want it to end.

Best one of the series to date
