Since the dawn of civilization, men and women have been magnetically and irresistibly drawn together into romantic relationships, not so much by what they see, feel and think, but more by invisible forces. When individuals with healthy emotional backgrounds meet, the irresistible love force creates a sustainable, reciprocal and stable relationship. Codependents and emotional manipulators are similarly enveloped in a seductive dreamlike state; however, it will later unfold into a painful seesaw of love, pain, hope and disappointment.

People with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling - in the extreme.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Publisher's Summary
The Human Magnet Syndrome: The Codependent Narcissist Trap is a complete rewrite of Ross's first book. Ross provides a more explicit rendering of The Human Magnet Syndrome, that includes new theories, explanations, and concepts. The information on Gaslighting and The Narcissistic Abuse Syndrome, like the rest of the information, is cutting edge and completely original. This audiobook contains many more case examples and stories of Ross's own codependency recovery. Like its predecessor, it is written for both the layman and professional. Men and women have been magnetically and irresistibly drawn together into romantic relationships, not so much by what they see, feel and think, but more by invisible forces.
Codependents and pathological narcissists are enveloped in a seductive dreamlike state; however, it will later unfold into a painful “seesaw” of love, pain, hope, and disappointment. The soul mate of the codependent's dreams will become the narcissist of their nightmares. Fans of The Human Magnet Syndrome will better understand why they, despite their dreams for true love, find themselves hopelessly and painfully in love with partners who hurt them.

Great book horrible narration
Great information and if you listen to Ross Rosenberg’s YouTube shows then u know how this book should sound and be read.
Idk how this guy is reading this but his style is all wrong for this book. I hope at some future date Ross Rosenberg does the narration that way I don’t have to rewind it like 10 times per paragraph to get the information out before my mind tunes him out. Seriously horrible narration. He might be good at other books but not this one!

Excellent book for cluster b magnets
I was looking for something specifically geared towards the victims of NPD/ BPD/ ASPD abuse that provides a timeline to move away from those types of people and steps to love oneself. I wish Ross was the reader because I listen to a lot of his YouTube videos so it was odd to have someone else’s voice, but I got a lot out of this book. I’m going to listen to Boundaries next, as strong boundaries are the key to removing these people from my life. I like that Ross wrote this from his own experience. Many therapists don’t understand or believe me when I tell them I’ve fallen for a NPD, BPD and ASPD. With this knowledge and some faith in myself starting to grow, I know I will overcome this cycle. Highly recommend to anyone wishing to stop dancing with narcissists and ready for reciprocal, respectful love.

GREAT despite being corny and self-referrential
Don't let the goofy narration, and corny writing detract you. The point being made is an important one. All roads lead to feeling not good enough, not being able to cope, or feeling unlovable. Using the idea of Self Love Deficiency to reframe codependancy and toxic people is a mini-revelation.

Life is humbling.
I also being a published author ask why is there no reference to GOD allowing bad things to happen to good people to learn. Because learning is the reason for our existence. We are to be humbled and walk through "our" life "Present & Connected", NOT unconscious.
I do appreciate all the labels "significance" placed on the evil & victim humans, so we may recognize at a quicker pace when they present themselves, thank you.

Could not finish it and please don't waste your time, you will only feel re_abused as he loves the sound of his own voice. That is the only well-judged part of this book - the smug narrator's tone matches exactly the self-satisfied theme of this pean to his own "achievements". Sickening really..

I'm not impressed
The book discusses codependency and narcissism. Although the author starts by explaining and advertising in excruciating detail how helpful the book is supposed to be and how interesting and new these perspectives are, quite a lot of it is repetitive and not particularly interesting. The author starts with the provocative hypothesis that both disorders are to blame equally and claims to dissect and explain why and how... before just painting one of the disorders (narcissism) in the bleakest and most devilish colors, while portraying the other (codependency) as producing helpless victims.
There are a few anecdotes, a lot of cringy family history from which no real lessons are drawn and lots of repetitive, unexplained allegations as to how narcissistic people pull the strings of codependent people. The world, however, isn't divided into just these two extremes and I have met very toxic people that partially filled both roles at once. The author so far hasn't even acknowledged the possibility of any grey areas: There's just narcissist and their codependent victims and they are drawn to each other with by the magnet syndrome.
Not only is the book extremely repetitive, it spends much more time trying to sell why it's allegedly awesome than really providing insights. One bad metaphor chases the other: love is like magnets; and gravity; and a dance; and light waves; and a play with people on costumes; and a simple math equation, etc. ... none of these bring any real insights; they are just used to again and again and again provide the same examples of very similar people doing the same things.
In some parts this sounds more like a preacher trying to repeat unfounded beliefs in the hope that any statement, repeated often enough, makes a truth.
While the narrator has a pleasant and nice voice and his pronunciation is very clear, I don't particularly like the way he is emphasizing pretty much every sentence. I'd have preferred a less intense and more balanced voice.

Great insight but no advice how to use the info
I listened to this awhile ago now but Ross Rosenberg is definitely well versed in the subject of the codependent - narc relationship. This book gave some good insights and I really found it helpful to see the dynamic set on a scale as he put it. And throughout the book, I was eagerly waiting to hear his advice on what to do if you have experienced a lot of what was discussed but unfortunately - there was nothing! I was so disappointed. From what I had heard in his youtube videos and social media, this book was going to give the help to codependents that we need. But instead, it was just an explanation of what we go through and why... I wanted solutions. So I think I've been more than fair in giving this book 4 stars given the expectations, and I would've definitely given 5 if I was given advice what to "do" with all this information!

Very obnoxious
My perception of this book is that it was written as a trophy by the author to himself. It is geared to other therapists almost as a boast or product of pride. I found it very annoying to listen to it as I seeking to gain more personal insight - I needed it to be more about me rather than him (the author). 10% is good as a self help diagnosis. The rest is is just me me me talk. I suffered through the entire book as a challenge to see how self absorbed the author was, hoping it would improve, and to see how many times he said the words me or I. Tag- you’re in!

Insightful and detailed
I’m a bit wary of all the talk about narcissism these days but I did find this one thoughtful and useful. Worth a listen/read if you’re looking for insight into aggressive family dynamics continuing into adulthood, or the roots of highly unequal or manipulative behaviour in romantic relationships. The focus is more on romantic and sexual relationships.
The narrator’s voice was cocky and inappropriately chirpy for a book on trauma and abuse, his words were over pronounced like a game show host. I wish audible would take more care with narration.

Listening to this while getting abused
Listening to gaslighting definition and narcissist rage while getting abused in real-time was an experience to treasure. Im glad to be on the path to self love. This was an eye-opening shocking revelation for me...finally getting my butt into action!

My Favourite Book!
Ross Rosenberg is a genius! This book is one of my favourite books! If you're interested in psychology or human behaviour this book will strike your fancy. Especially if you are intrigued in how humans tick and why nice people are attracted to the "bad boy/girl". I'm particularly interested in the phenomenon of codependency and narcissism which Ross articulates perfectly. I had many lightbulb moments after listening to this book. Highly recommend.

Oh my!....my eyes are now open
This book is amazing.
Everyone should be educated with the valuable life information in this book.
I now can see where before I was blind and living with drama.
Now I understand.
Thank you Ross what a brilliant book.
Trauma is subtle but unhelpful strategies can rule your life.
I am so happy to have read this book.
I am free.
