Publisher's summary

Graham Masterton is one of the horror genre's most celebrated and popular writers. Now, after eight years of writing crime fiction, he is back with this terrifying novel about a haunted house on Dartmoor.

All Hallows Hall, a rambling Tudor mansion on the edge of the bleak, misty moor is not a place many would choose to live. Yet the former governor of Dartmoor Prison did just that. Now he's dead, and his estranged family is set to inherit his estate.

But when the dead man's family come to stay, the atmosphere of the moors seems to drift into every room. Floorboards creak, secret passageways echo and wind whistles in the house's famous priest hole. And then, on the morning the family decides to leave All Hallows Hall once and for all, their young son, Timmy, goes missing....

I would pass on this

no sympathetic characters, gratuitous grosse sections, unconvincing ending, weird but not weird enough to enjoy

Abysmal Waste of Money

So poorly written. Expository vomit, writing the same thing over and over and over and over - the performance doesn't do it any service either. Boring beyond belief, interesting concept that goes nowhere and bogs itself down with one note characters with zero personality and bland, watered down descriptions. It feels cookie cutter, cheap, written for the sake of putting pen to paper. Also the narrator is just... as bored as we are?
Avoid at all costs.

My First Masterton Book

How have I never heard of Graham Masterton? He has written many books over a long career. I was unfamiliar with the author and took a chance on this book. Right from the beginning I was drawn into the story and looked up Graham Masterton. I was pleased to discover there are many, many more titles to explore. Many times, it has been my experience that some authors seem to get tired out in the latter end of their careers. Their stories cease to engage and resonate. This is not the case with this story. I was taken immediately. The plot was puzzling indeed. The setting was perfectly creepy. Katherine Press did a great job of narrating the different characters. I cannot identify anything that I feel should have been done better. I will definitely be checking other titles by Masterton titles.

I dod not like this book.

It was a huge struggle to finish this, on fact I accidentally left it playing I think and it finished without me. ao I guess I couldn't even get there bc I'm not going back to listen. the performance was good. but the actual story lacked slot for me. There were so many characters and I don't feel like any of them were developed then there were so many additional characters added in. plus I thought this was to be a scary story and it definitely wasn't. others may like it, but not I.

amusing!

I find this book very disturbing. the last hour was good that's all I got to say. of course these authors have to drag a certain issue in there, or an organization will feel all bent out of shape. that's one of the reasons i give it a low rating.

Very enjoyable.

I don't usually get scared when I read stories, at least not since I was 14. This book did it! It actually had me a little scared. It was a good story a different take on haunted houses and .The story is paced well . It's a good read the kind of story that makes you want to keep going on to find out what happens. Very enjoyable.

Meh- very flat

There was no tension in this book. All the characters were oddly very excepting of the supernatural things happening in the house and didn’t seem panicked to leave. Nothing that happened seemed scary at all and it should have been. I listened to this in the dark while home alone and I actually fell asleep.

Not GM's best

The story was predictable in quite a few of the parts. Some parts struck me as a little silly. The 5 year old boy spoke like someone much older. The narration was for the most part was rubbish. The narrator spoke too fast which meant there was no reaction to certain events and on trying to sound like a man it just sounded like she had a sore throat. I ended up turning off the Audio before I even got half way and read the book on my kindle instead.

a serious case of verbal diorhea

I really have to admire the narrator of this excuse for a novel. She stuck with it and that’s something to admire because the book has absolutely nothing to recommend it. Loads of conversation between family members that don’t like each other, a house full of whispers, an ambition to have it made in to a movie (god help us all if the movie industry obliges) and not all that much else. Don’t waste your time on this book, it’s not worth it.

Enjoyable enough

With an interesting premise it is an enjoyable enough listen, some of the characters are just outright dislikeable. It was enjoyable enough that I did then get another of his books.
It does have odd moments and feels like something is a bit missing when the sceptics all suddenly believe with very little evidence of anything but as long as you take it as a light book it is worth the time.

Wow!

What a fascinating story. One of the best horror stories I have listened to for a long time. I hope the writer has written others in the same vein and look forward to them if he has.
