“Why run from a haunted house when you can stay and ignore the ghosts? Just when you thought you'd seen everything a haunted house novel could do, The September House comes along and delivers an eerie, darkly funny, and emotionally grounded book about the ghosts that haunt houses and marriages."– Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

A woman is determined to stay in her dream home even after it becomes a haunted nightmare in this compulsively readable, twisty, and layered debut novel.

When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee.

Margaret is not most people.

Margaret is staying. It’s her house. But after four years Hal can’t take it anymore, and he leaves abruptly. Now, he’s not returning calls, and their daughter Katherine—who knows nothing about the hauntings—arrives, intent on looking for her missing father. To make things worse, September has just begun, and with every attempt Margaret and Katherine make at finding Hal, the hauntings grow more harrowing, because there are some secrets the house needs to keep.

Editorial Review

You only get one dream house!
Margaret and Hal move into their “forever” home, and there’s no limit to the lengths Margaret is willing to go to keep the dream alive. The house is perfect—Victorian style, just as she wanted (also my personal favorite era in décor). It’s all she could ask for—with the exception of one nightmare month. Each September, things get strange. The blood-spewing walls, screaming ghosts running through the halls, and eerie creepy ambiance—Margaret and Hal will just have to get used to it. But four years in, Hal can’t take it anymore, even as Margaret continues to follow the unwritten rules of the home. Would you put up a fight to stay in your dream house? Kimberly Farr’s aptitude in narration embodies every character’s tone and mood so well, you may think there are multiple narrators! —Disha M., Audible Editor

This was a light summer read with a fun premise. Unfortunately, the two main characters are completely unlikeable. After her abusive alcoholic husband abandons her and subsequently vanishes, Margaret continues her bland existence living in her forever home with her equally forever resident ghosts, who are the worst houseguests ever. Judging by the complexity of her interior dialog, Maggie’s kind of a dim bulb. Even worse, she’s just … so … boooooring. Her daughter, Katherine, on the other hand, has a chip the size of the Western hemisphere on her shoulder and is constantly pissed about something. Katie has exactly two emotions: screaming rage and near apoplexy. By the end of the book, I was cheering for the murderous basement-dwelling ghost to move upstairs and make short work of these tiresome women.

Good story premise; annoying main characters

I’m so disappointed in this book. It was soooo long and sooo boring. I completely wasted a credit on this book. If you waste a credit on it, just know you’ve been warned. SMH…

Waste of credit

I loved this book up until the “daughter” came into the story. She was just so ANNOYING it made me lose interest in listening to the rest or I’d have to skip any parts with her in it 🥴

The daughter is so annoying….

I can't believe how great this book is! it starts campy spooky and halfway through turns really dark and serious but the writing style and the narration is so superb it still has the cosy vibes! I'm speechless. Recommend it to anyone and everyone

this book is amazing!

Oh, my, goodness. This book is going to reside in my top ten for the year!

Margaret has found her dream home, and when things go crazy during September, well, she has found a way to deal with them. There are rules after all. Hal, her husband, is not quite as thrilled with the September events, but throughout the first three years, they learn ways to manage - until Hal has had enough. He is determined to leave, and wants Margaret to leave with him, but she refuses. There is something about the house, something that draws her back, unwilling to let her go too far away.

Master Vale, the Pranksters, Fredericka, everything with the house calls to her, and she is determined to keep her house, no matter what.

This book, sigh, was fantastic. I was not ready for it to be finished. I wanted more. The book just refused to let you walk away (there are rules after all), and this is easily a "once you start, you will not stop" read.
