Publisher's summary

Battered war correspondent John Bailey is a man living on the edge. He’s haunted by nightmares of being kidnapped and tortured in Iraq, and he’s drinking too much to drown the memories. As he battles to get his life back together, a story breaks that will force him back into the spotlight - and into the crosshairs of a deadly international player.

When a beautiful prostitute is found murdered in her luxury Sydney apartment, Bailey is ordered to cover the story by The Journal’s editor and his old friend, Gerald Summers, because he can’t trust anyone else.

One of the victim’s clients, a key advisor to the Defence Minister, is chief suspect in her murder, and he’s on the run. When he contacts Bailey, claiming to have information that will bring down the government, the stakes become deadly. To complicate matters, the investigating police detective is the woman Bailey walked out on a decade ago.

When a ruthless CIA fixer turns up, followed by a murderous Chinese agent hot on his trail, Bailey realises he has stumbled onto the story of a lifetime - one that he may not live to tell.

Greater and Good too!

Tim Ayliffe's first book is quite a teaser with more to come in the next two instalments of the trilogy. Gripping and informative, Tim brings his vast experience as a journalist and writer to the task of bringing his main character John Bailey to life. Bailey a tragic figure in many ways yet typical of the type of journalist who has seen to many battlefields and bars to make for a wholesome life. I enjoyed the narration by Topu and found the audiobook version "hard to put down". Looking forward to more Bailey. The biggest challenge for Tim in writing the book was to make his main character believable and to keep his readers (listeners) on the journey. For me he succeeds at every turn. Highly recommended and yes there does some to be a familial connection in the writer's surname.

Greater than Good

Finally an Aussie espionage story! Tim Ayliffe brings his expertise as a journalist to this gripping narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat til the end. John Bailey is a well fleshed-out character who feels real and is fallible, not a perfect hero.
The plot does feel a little dated reading this in 2023 considering the changes in geopolitics and relationships between Australia and China. But other than that it’s a thoroughly engaging story.
The narration isn’t the best I’ve heard, but it’s still pretty great.
Highly recommend listening to or reading this one!
