Resumen del Editor

From the internationally best-selling author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master”, a “gripping and eerie” (Karin Slaughter) thriller about a dangerous young woman with the ability to know when someone is lying - and the criminal psychologist who must outwit her to survive.

A girl is discovered hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Half-starved and filthy, she won’t tell anyone her name, or her age, or where she came from. Maybe she is 12, maybe 15. She doesn’t appear in any missing persons file, and her DNA can’t be matched to an identity. Six years later, still unidentified, she is living in a secure children’s home with a new name, Evie Cormac. When she initiates a court case demanding the right to be released as an adult, forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven must determine if Evie is ready to go free. But she is unlike anyone he’s ever met - fascinating and dangerous in equal measure.

Meanwhile, Cyrus is called in to investigate the shocking murder of a high school figure-skating champion, Jodie Sheehan, who died on a lonely footpath close to her home. Pretty and popular, Jodie is portrayed by everyone as the ultimate girl-next-door, but as Cyrus peels back the layers, a secret life emerges - one that Evie Cormac, the girl with no past, knows something about. A man haunted by his own tragic history, Cyrus is caught between the two cases - one girl who needs saving and another who needs justice. What price will he pay for the truth?

Emotionally explosive and swiftly paced, this is an “impeccable thriller with a plot that encompasses murder, incest, drugs, abuse, torture, sex - you name it, this book has it” (New York Journal of Books).

I miss Joe!

This was not as good as the Joe O’Loughin series. It ended like there will be a sequel. This psychiatrist is no Joe and I doubt a series will be as addicting.
Still I did enjoy the book.

great book, interesting premises for the plots.

I enjoyed the book. I was able to figure out the major twists fairly easily, but there are only a handful of stories that I don't. (it's a curse, as I like being surprised :) ). so not neccesarily meaning it's the author's story that made parts predictable, probably me. It's not a typical story in this genre for sure.
Broken characters that I didn't feel sorry for, they seemed relatable not to be pitied as they were strong and accepting, yet fragile.
definitely feels as if a sequel may come.
If you like a nice change in a genre that doesn't switch it up much, you'll like this.
(*warning, some disturbing scenes *)

loved the narrator

I felt like the narrator did a really good job at both male and female voices. this made the changing narrators a lot less jarring than another books. however, the story was kind of meh in my opinion. teen character definitely felt like it was written by a man.

Is it really a stand alone?

I like the story but was Sooo disappointed in the ending. If you follow it up with When She Was Good it makes for a much more complete story. Taking the two together I would give it almost 5 stars.

Excellent!

The novel is a carefully constructed whodunnit where all parts fit together. The work of Joe Jameson is incredible, doing at least 8 different voices, male and female. The title is unfortunate and should have been changed. I wouldn’t be surprise to see this novel made

Great Story & Great Performance!

I could not stop listening to this story! The performance was one of the best I have ever heard. You could clearly make out all of the different characters. Also, it had two stories bouncing back and forth, but it was not confusing at all. It was very easy to follow. I loved this book!

I would buy it again and again

This book is an absolute masterpiece. The character development is so strong I actually care about the fictional characters.
Although the book is based on very heavy and traumatic subject matter; it isn’t a book about victims as much as it is survivors.
