Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Last House Guest - a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick - comes a “hauntingly atmospheric and gorgeously written page-turner” (Kimberly McCreight, New York Times best-selling author of A Good Marriage) about a young woman plagued by night terrors after a childhood trauma who wakes one evening to find a corpse at her feet.

Everyone knows the story of “the girl from Widow Hills”.

Arden Maynor was just a child when she was swept away while sleepwalking during a terrifying rainstorm and went missing for days. Strangers and friends, neighbors and rescue workers, set up search parties and help vigils, praying for her safe return. Against all odds, she was found, alive, clinging to a storm drain. The girl from Widow Hills was a living miracle. Arden’s mother wrote a book. Fame followed. Fans and fan letters, creeps, and stalkers. And every year, the anniversary. It all became too much. As soon as she was old enough, Arden changed her name and disappeared from the public eye.

Now a young woman living hundreds of miles away, Arden goes by Olivia. She’s managed to stay off the radar for the last few years. But with the 20th anniversary of her rescue approaching, the media will inevitably renew its interest in Arden. Where is she now? Soon Olivia feels like she’s being watched and begins sleepwalking again, like she did long ago, even waking up outside her home. Until late one night, she jolts awake in her yard. At her feet is the corpse of a man she knows - from her previous life, as Arden Maynor.

The girl from Widow Hills is once again at the center of this story in this “compulsive page-turner” (Booklist).

Not One Of Her Best

I have read several MM books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Particularly The Last House Guest, which I absolutely loved. This latest offering falls short right out of the gate. She does an excellent job establishing this creepy and slowly building tension or fear factor, I will give her that. But there are so many improbable things aspects that I just couldn’t really buy in all the way. From the beginning, this whole concept that I child would go missing in this way, then found 3 days later alive and well and that this type of event would create such fervor or garner interest from the public on such a level twenty years later? Not believable. If there was some other compelling incident or aspect to the event then maybe but as it stands, no way. Also Rebecca Ross sounded unusually nasal or whiny or something in this one. I love her work as a performer but strangely with this recording it was just not great. Sorry I wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t get into it...

Wordy

There was so much description that I felt bogged down in minutia and was unable to really get into this novel. 2.5 hours into this novel and I had to put it on the DNF list. Character development was poor when was the plot going to start, and there where cut back to an earlier time that added nothing to the story line from what I was able to discern. Sorry but not sorry I have never not put an audio book on the DNF as I can listen when I am in the car.

Boring

When you listen to an audio book, the narrator can make or break the book. In this book, the narrator has a nice voice if not a little too perky. It didn’t fit the description of the book. But I think that is OK, because the book is a snooze. Nothing happens to make me want to continue listening. I will since I paid full price for the book. It was truly bad.

RECOMMENDATION: SKIP IT

Great suspense

Great suspense. Twists and turns aplenty. I have to write more words to submit this. I won’t write any more reviews for audible!
