A WOMAN’S WORLD BEST NEW BOOK

"Heart-breaking, validating, exciting." (Hypable)

"Rich historical detail...this saga has it all." (Woman's World)

Shining a light on a little-known piece of history The Flight Girls is a sweeping portrayal of women's fearlessness, love, and the power of friendship to make us soar.

1941. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It’s why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it’s why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as treasured as the women with whom she flies. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe.

To make everything she’s lost count for something, Audrey joins the Women Airforce Service Pilots program. The bonds she forms with her fellow pilots reignite a spark of hope in the face war, and - when James goes missing in action - give Audrey the strength to cross the front lines and fight not only for her country, but for the love she holds so dear.

"Captivated me from the first page and never let go...a powerful tale of courage and sacrifice by the Women Airforce Service Pilots during WWII. A spectacular first novel." (Sara Ackerman, USA TODAY best-selling author of The Lieutenant's Nurse)

Left wanting more...

I wish the book was more about the women & their flight training/roles in the war. I wasn't expecting it to be a love story & wasn't necessarily disappointed by it, I thought it would be more about the women who flew during the war. We always hear about the brave men that fought for us, but not about the women. The narrator was very good, but the overall story left me wanting more.

Wonderful Story

Loved this book. I don’t know if it’s because it’s set in an era I’m drawn to or that I’m a woman veteran ... or maybe that Xe Sands is one of my all time favorite narrators.... or .... lol. I couldn’t stop listening. The story of Audrey and her friends, her love, progress and hardship of war kept my interest throughout. There is a great love but this is not a “sizzling” type of book. It’s one of a great love found woven in with historical events. I haven’t cried over a book in a very long time, but certain scenes describing the heartbreak and horror of war as well as a few others brought me to tears. Great afterword by the author.

90% romance, 10% history

This is more romance than history. The strongest part of the story is the comraderie between the WASP girls. The romance was over-written and, frankly, sappy. Xe Sands is a hit or miss narrator for me; sometimes excellent, sometimes grating. This was one of the later.

Fiction but true - real, raw, and worth the read!

....INCREDIBLE. A flawless work of perfect art about quite possibly the most pivotal moment in modern history. Everything was believable: the characters, the feelings, the situations, the dialogue....... I enjoyed this so much and I love that there were strong brave women back then to rise to such an occasion. And I am so grateful there are women like this author willing to put pen to paper and immortalize them with words so that their legacy can live on. I will never forget this book as long as I live.

Good story but Narration troublesome!

An intriguing tale of heroics and fearlessness during such a dark time in history. Such bravery! The narrator is troublesome though...she tries TOO hard to act casual but actually comes off as artificial, aloof, and disengaging. I had a difficult time relating to the characters—actually, I was too distracted by the narration. It does get better as the story progresses but is overall an unfortunate aspect of this book. A better narrator is befitting for such a great novel :(

captivating!

my curiosity on what was going to happen continued with each chapter and event. vivid descriptions, genuine friendships, playful, and sad! Took me to a time that I never was a part of, but now I understand the importance of women training pilots for the war...the women who were pilots, yet not recognized as serving in the war or as veterans...The Wasps! The story helped me really understand my mother era a bit more.
