Good Information, but Redundant and Annoying.
This book has some great insights and ideas. Earl is brilliant. But for me, it's one of the most annoying listens ever. First, there is a narrator that attempts to summarize each chapter before and after Earl speaks. Unlike Earl, the narrator is BORING.
Each chapter is divided into many audio clips of Earl over the years. Some of the recordings are old, difficult to hear, and outdated. Some of Earl's wisdom is repeated throughout the book in various clips from different talks that Earl has given. At least 10 times in this book I thought "wait a minute, I heard this already".
WORST OF ALL, for me, is the horrible music that precedes and follows each clip and chapter. If you removed the narrator, annoying music, outdated clips, and redundancies, you could cut about 5 hours off the length of this book and it would be a MUCH better listen.

Timeless Principles for Self Growth
The only negative point in this book is that old tapes from Earl Nightingale are not well restored and might prove unenjoyable to listen to, although his narration is among the best in recorded history. That's only ~10% of the book so it shouldn't deter you from purchasing it, but you should plan a relatively quiet environment and be prepared to lower the speed sometimes (if you're used to 2x speeds as I am). I averaged between 1.3 and 1.8x.
Everything else about this program is world-class advice for a great life. I've rarely seen a better collection of sound suggestions, on pretty much every topic. There are many quotes of famous (and unknown) authors throughout the book, which serve the many points quite well, and are very fruitful to ponder alone.
It's already long but covers a wide variety of things, so obviously you'll find useful using it as a starting point for self growth, read more specific books on each topic. But as far as general life advice goes, this is pure gold.
If you're already familiar with several works in this field, you'll probably recognize many a principle explained by Earl Nightingale, for he's probably the leader of them all; but repetition is always good to really integrate concepts, and besides few managed to word these so well as he did.
If you don't know these things, chances are you're missing out big time on your potential in this life.
For all these reasons, and because I've tremendously enjoyed this audiobook, I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Everyone.

Not as good as the tape cassette version
Would you listen to The Essence of Success again? Why?
Bears repeat listening, if you can find a way of converting the audio files to remove Steve Kings' annoying preambles and interruptions.
What did you like best about this story?
Episodic format
What aspect of Earl Nightinale’s performance might you have changed?
Unfortunately, Steve King, the other narrator that introduces the passages gets in the way - the original version was just Earl. You keep thinking, "Yeah-yeah, Steve, enough already, STFU!".
Steve's introductions are utterly superfluous and pad out the audiobook with preambles of each part that Earl manages to speak himself anyway about the subject with considerable more brevity, avuncular warmth and authority. Steve seems cheesy by comparison.
Nightingale-Conant in the early days messed around far less with its archive material.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no, it is 16 hours, probably an hour of that is padding of Steve King's cheesy 'gee whizz' comments.
Any additional comments?
The original audio has been slightly sped up and the background music is entirely unnecessary.
lacks chapter markings

An apt title
Would you listen to The Essence of Success again? Why?
Yes. This book has so much in the way of treasure. I keep going back over it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Essence of Success?
Yes, all of it... I'm defiantly a fan.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
There really is too many to list. Just start from the beginning. I think most people will find most of the content very useful.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It felt as though I was listening to someone who embodied integrity and honour. Such correctness made me want to stand upright. There was also the relaxed soothing delivery in the authors voice.
