A call in the middle of the night summoned psychiatrist Laura McCaffrey out into the rain-swept streets of Los Angeles. The police had found her husband—beaten to death. But what of her daughter, Melanie, whom he had kidnapped six years earlier? This is one of the classic. I believe it originally released in 1985 and now the audiobook. The story is quite predictable but it’s still very fun to listen. Troy Duran is the GOAT, I can listen to him reading anything. It was first time for me listening Moniqua Plante, she was fantastic as well. The book created an intense scene and suspenseful also frightening as the story goes. I couldn’t stop listening. I would give it 6 stars just for the narrators.

Dean Koontz never disappoints

I love Dean Koontz- but I cringed at his rampant use of the word “autism” to describe something that was absolutely not autism. The story was predictable but the characters were fun. The female narrator had some odd inflection, but I enjoyed the male’s performance.

Misuse of the term “Autism”

This book was at least 60% longer than needed to be. It was a long hard slog to get through interesting, but not overly so. There was no reference to what year the story was taking place. That was interesting because Audible has the release of the book as 2025 yet in the story one of the characters is using floppy discs and at another point, a main character sees a Steven Spielberg movie in a theater. The above suggests to me as occurring somewhere in the 1980s? I normally really, really enjoy this author, but this book not so much.

The length, the lack of time in history the story takes place in.

Audible should warn readers that this as a republished book. It’s a Koontz classic but dated.

Classic Koontz

I was very disappointed. This was more a police homicide story than a haunting Dean Koontz psychological thriller. I found it tolerable but boring. I figured out at the beginning of the story who was behind the murders. If I had not chosen the book to listen to, I never would have believed that Dean Koontz wrote the story.

Not the typical Dean Koontz story
