Enter the fray in this luminous new adventure from Christopher Buehlman, set during the war-torn, goblin-infested years just before The Blacktongue Thief.

The goblins have killed all of our horses and most of our men.

They have enslaved our cities, burned our fields, and still they wage war.

Now, our daughters take up arms.

Galva — Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill — has defied her family’s wishes and joined the army’s untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

The road to victory is bloody, and goblins are clever and merciless. The Raven Knights can take nothing for granted — not the bonds of family, nor the wisdom of their leaders, nor their own safety against the dangerous war birds at their side. But some hopes are worth any risk.

I'm a fan of this author. I have a bias. That being said the world this book and the previous book are set in have captured my imagination. I was looking forward to this for a very long time and I'm not disappointed. Some other reviews express disappointment... I think The Blacktongue thief was funny. It was a narrative from a different character with a different story to tell. This book was about Galva and I found the action and imagery awesome and terrible. The goblins aren't just "bad" like in a Tolkien novel, they are horrific. Buehlman is a fantastic horror writer and mixing this high fantasy with his brand of horror is a powerful combination. My only regret is now we need to wait for the next entry.

Brutal and Beautiful World Building

This is the story of what lead up to The Blacktongue Thief. It’s a tale of war, and of a society where women are warriors. It’s only fitting that the narrator is a woman, with a gorgeous voice and beautiful Spanish accent. The writing is superb. There is a poem in the book that is so stunning it stopped me in my tracks to listen, and I am NOT a poetry fan. The way the poem ends…💔. It’s a wonderful book. And , oh, did I mention the war corvids? That can talk? Oh yeah, you need to read this book. Even if fantasy is not your genre of choice. Buehlman’s The Lesser Dead is a bona fide masterpiece. He’s among my top three writers, and the other two have been around for fifty years plus. The future looks bright for this talent and we get to go along with him for the ride.

War. Love. Giant ass crows. What’s not to like?

Perfectly casted narrator and the story gave her a lot to work with. I'll definitely relisten while I wait for the next installment!

Excellent book!

Another review labeled this a Greek tragedy and I think that’s mostly apt. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking. I was so excited when I heard another book in this world was coming out and then disappointed when I learned it would be a prequel. Having finished the prequel, however, I’m glad this came next. The world and the main character, Galva, are so much more alive in my mind now. Their pain in this book feels like it has more stakes because you know what comes next. I look forward to rereading black tongue thief to see how this changes my perception.

And a shoutout to the narrator - they nailed it for me.

What I wanted without knowing it

I laugh, teared up, and relished every point in this book. The voice actor did an amazing job of conveying the raw emotions and joy in each turn.

A fantastic Backstory!

A genuine war story with optimism, boredom, romance, and all the horrors of war viscerally described in a convincing Spanish accent. Idk what it is about the author’s prose but he has a tenderness about his writing that you don’t see in many male authors when it comes to romance. The ending is also tragic, but being a prequel you already know how some things will end just not how, somewhat like Rogue One. The one thing that bothers me about this audiobook, and the last one, is the songs. I don’t know what it is about the songs and I suspect it’s actually an audio mixing issue but if they were any longer I would actually consider skipping them. Anyway, good book, nice switch up with the narrator, and we gotta get book 3 out soon because there is a drought of good content out there.

A tragic war story

I really wanted a sequel to Blacktongue Thief, because of that and the change in narrator, which I did not enjoy as much, it took me a while to get into this book. Having said that I really enjoy the world that’s being built in these, books as well as truly enjoying the character development and overall style of the writing. Not the book I wanted but in the end I really enjoyed this thoroughly.

Not what I wanted, but in the end, really enjoyed this book.

Loved it. Way better than The Black Tongued Thief! Well written. Hope there is more to come for Galva.

Very action packed

I greatly enjoyed the first book in the series, and as such it was with anticipation as well as curiosity I started on this book. And it definitely lived up to the hopes I had.
Dark and bloody, but also funny and light at times. Great performance by Nikki Garcia, absolutely loved her giving voice to Braga.

A great sequel to Blacktongue Thief

Dislike? The fact that it ended 😭😭😭 I don't know what to do now that it's over.

One of the best audio books I've listened to ever, actually.
