The only novel ever to win the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke awards and the first audiobook in Ann Leckie's New York Times best-selling trilogy.

On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest.

Once, she was the Justice of Toren - a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy.

Now, an act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with one fragile human body, unanswered questions, and a burning desire for vengeance.

In the Ancillary world:

  1. Ancillary Justice
  2. Ancillary Sword
  3. Ancillary Mercy

Featured Article: The Best Audiobooks for Fans of Dune

Ever since its publication in 1965, Frank Herbert's Dune has set the bar high for epic science fiction. In fact, Herbert's beloved novel is considered to be one the best sci-fi books of all time. Dune was the recipient of multiple awards, including the inaugural Nebula Award for best novel in 1966. And in October 2021, more than 50 years after the novel's initial release, fans of Dune are being treated to a film adaptation, directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Hard to grasp what is going on at the beginning since all the names are too similar. One thing I think this needs changing is how to tell when we're on a different scene. I found myself very lost at times before I realized the location changed to another planet 10 years later or something.

Very well written but too slow for me

I know this novel is near the top of almost everyone’s SF reading or recommendation lists- and to be fair, it is definitely worthy of such accolades. I just wish the writing could have been tighter and the characters a bit more dynamic. Honestly, I could not listen to this in the evening because it put me to sleep. That’s not to say the reader was poor; in fact, she was very satisfactory. However, because there was so much 1st person exposition (main character thinking to herself), the reading was sometimes fairly monotonous.

Longer than it had to be

Really enjoyed it. Slow start but it is very well written and performed. Great read!!

Great story

I can see why this book won so many awards. There is not one false step. Not one out-of-character action for the sake of a plot point. Not one pause for a data dump. The description of the worlds and societies grows organically as the story moves forward and it is all so real that you never question it for a moment. The action, whether physical, political, social or personal, feels completely authentic. Book 2, here I come!

Brilliant from the first word to the last

I’m not sure what I was expecting by the title at description, but it blew them away. I’ll admit it was a little hard to follow at first, some of the words being very alien (intentionally I’m sure) and not having a book in front of me to visualize the words. However, once the story got going, it really pulled me in. I think I binged half the book in one setting.

I really enjoyed the main character, and the narration was some of the best I’ve heard in an audiobook. Each character was very distinctly narrated, you could always tell who was talking at any given moment. Just wonderful voice acting,

While the words can be alien, the concepts are very easy to understand, much unlike some other sci-fi I’ve read. The technology isn’t so futuristic to be unrecognizable, rather fairly easy to visualize. The cultures and way that the author utilizes languages in this book is fascinating and incredibly intriguing.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone, regardless of whether sci-fi is your cup of tea or not.

Unexpectedly Intriguing

A great story centered on the eternal question of personhood, as AI becomes aa thing in our own world.

Love Leckie's universe

I bought Ancillary Justice in print form several years ago and enjoyed it very much. The writing is deep and rich and elegant. When you add the vocal performance it elevates an already spectacular story to the height of being the best audio book I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to.

Deep elegant writing and vocal performance

The sci fi technological and internal psychological world building are very impressive. Suffers from verbose dialogue and an imbalance of action, as in "lack thereof."

Impressive world building, too much chatting.

Fantastic reading, perfect for the story. I don't always enjoy sci fi books, but this completely captured me. It's clear why it won so many awards.

Couldn't put it down!
