Billy doesn't treat her kindly and after racking up debts with James Miller, he sends Isabella to work for James in exchange for the money he owes. It's suggested that James marries Isabella but he has other ideas and tries to help her escape to the West to live a better life.
Meanwhile John Ackers in Silverton works all hours in the family's general store after his Ma and Pa died. His sister decides to look for a bride for him without him knowing. After Isabella sees the advertisement and corresponds with who she thinks is John, she travels West.
