Publisher's Summary

"Either Europe or death in poverty?"

One of the gem-like African novels inspired by the journeys of Najwa Zebian, Muhammad Al Samawi, and Mohsin Hamed.

The everyday African life of Aliou, in the small village in Gambia of his birth, is one of hardship and happiness. Despite his talent in soccer and his exceptional performance in school, this young, black, and gifted teenager seems destined to live out his days in the same sort of poverty that his family had experienced.

Then, with the sudden death of his father, Aliou is faced with a hard decision. With no financial backing to continue his studies, and pressure from his teen love interest's family to marry, he makes a momentous decision to go the Backway, where he hopes he can fulfill everyone's needs.

Aliou's journey shows examples of African exodus and diaspora as this young man's decision-making is crippled between the faultiness of the Arab Spring, the militia movement, and unintended consequences.

twist and turns that I did not expect at al

It's not that short, just long enough to keep me interested. The story is inspiring and still kept me in awe. With how it is narrated, it is easy to visualize the story and easy to get attached to the characters. Aliou has experienced different hurdles along the way, which made him stronger. This guy is bold and courageous. The book showed all his sides in every scenarios. It definitely made him a better. There are twist and turns that I did not expect at all in a novel. This is very realistic in a way.
