In the modern world, qi is money.

The days of traveling martial artists and mountaintop masters are over. Power is controlled by corporations, modernized martial arts sects, and governments. Those at the bottom of society struggle as second class citizens in a world in which power is a commodity.

Rick is a young fighter in this world. He doesn't dream of immortality or becoming the strongest, just of building a better life for himself and his sister, who suffers from a spiritual illness. Unfortunately, life isn't that easy....

Travis Baldree like usual is a 6 star performance. Love the take on a genre I had an addiction for. Looking forward to book 2.

Fantastic Cultivation Novel

I enjoyed listening to this one but have no desire to continue this series. A huge part of the reason is due to Mike. I get the whole cultivation genre always has an egotistical idiot who wants to destroy the MC but Mike's motivation was just stupid. All the other stuff made this book worth the credit and Mike's underwhelming grudge against Rick made this series stop after book one for me.

Good not great book

The Author of the book should have taken the opportunity to explain what each item they were looking to grow, and or improve in order for the reader to be more invested in the process

This book was great! The story was fantastic and I love the nice dynamics of the characters between each other. The story pacing was nice and the narration was phenomenal! A great underdog story for sure!

awesome modern take on cultivation

If you want a cultivation novel set in a a technological based, modern like, society this would be a good listen. Hard work and beaten down protagonist who is holding on and trying to roll with the punches. While there is plot armor, as in his choices sometimes work out and some people are nice when he believes in them, they rest of the book is him just trying his best at life as it beats the ever loving 💩 out of him. Decent but not my favorite.

I have never had a bad book from this voice actor as well!

😂 the joke extra chapter at the end though… I just can’t

Good overall

Wow, this book had everything I was looking for at the time. I have been on an Urban Fantasy kick while waiting on the next Jim Butcher book to come out, and have really learned to love the genera. While I don't think I have ever read any cultivation fantasy, this was done well and spliced into the urban fantasy environment, making for a very unique world for the story to explore. The addition of a LitRPG aspect where everyone can look at numbers and readouts of how strong they are was an interesting touch. originally it seemed a little childish at it heart, but was a great way to have a dedicated time to celebrate the growth and victories of the protagonist.

Overall I really liked this book and will suggest it to people in my reading group. I am looking forward to the next book, and hope the author doesn't try to just continue what he has going, but finds something new that the world has to offer to keep it fresh. Great book.

Urban fantasy meats Urban cultivation as a LitRPG

Some people claim that the flow of money is the same as the flow of energy. This book is obviously inspired by current financial schemes and institutions to set the context. A good book for young readers not familiar with money or the systems that transfer it away from them.

First, I will caution that the power cap for this series is low compared to other series. that is my personal preference, but I know for others that is a detriment.

I loved this trilogy. The story was straightforward as presented, but there were twists and machinations that kept the whole thing engaging. The focus of the MC on his position in society gives some nice texture, and the ultimate conclusion is very satisfying if a bit rushed. Some of the world-building is a little clunky, but forgivable. Travis Baldree gives a strong performance, as always.
