Publisher's summary
A queer horror collection that blends music and prose to bring its haunted worlds to life.
Prepare for a chilling journey from a ruined church in Philadelphia, where the spirit that lurks is far from benign to a Prohibition-era New Orleans jazz club, where a young man finds the love of his life - if he can live through the night; from a Detroit cemetery, where teenaged rituals have unforeseen consequences to a deserted beach in an unknown place, where two sisters let the ocean decide their fate; from the Jersey Shore, where the magic of a wistful summer could tear reality apart; to a Michigan high school, where a teenager finds the mystery man of his dreams who’s with him everywhere - and forever.
Written by Roan Parrish and with original music by Timmi Meskers inspired equally by the baroque and by 1980s horror movie soundtracks, Strange Company explores the places where the ordinary world breaks down into the inexplicable, the maddening, the dreadful.
“Strange Company is a wonderfully creepy and endlessly inventive collection of dark tales! Roan Parrish conjures real darkness here. Highly recommended!” (Jonathan Maberry, NY Times best-selling author of Ink and V-Wars)
"These are the queer horror stories I've been waiting for." (Kirsty Logan, author of The Things We Say in the Dark and The Sound at the End)

Story
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The only thing he doesn't hate is the music. Feeling an audience's energy as they lose themselves in Riven's music is a rush unlike anything else...until he meets Caleb Blake Whitman. Twisted and haunting.
Very twisted and haunting collection of stories- reminiscent of old Twilight Zone episodes.
The narrators were excellent, definitely made this worth a listen. I didn't even really mind the music, it was very atmospheric and felt right with this type of audiobook.

Some meh… some good
I have to admit the female centric stories left me puzzled. The writing is decent but story-lines… not so much. The only 2 stories I really like were the New Orleans & the MI high school vamp stories. The Philly church story came close but left me bereft at the end.
Narration on the male stories was good, the female ones… not. And it pains me to say that.
And though I appreciate good musical score-For me it’s distracting while listening to a story. I really wish Audible would stop with music background. I find it disruptive and, again distracting.

Beautiful and Unsettling
Between the incredibly descriptive and intelligent writing and the outstanding music I found this listen undeniably good. The music sets a perfect tone and the writing leaves you wanting more. So many questions lingered in my mind about each story for hours after I listened. Sea legs in particular was a high point. I thoroughly enjoyed this and if you are looking for something entertaining, creepy, smart and all around beautifully written (story and music) then I highly recommend.

🤭 ALERT!: These stories are very LGBTQ.
That being stated, I'm a fool. I didn't read the story details or else I'd have known it right? 1 story written in my old haunt in Detroit " CITY CLUB ", Cass & Bagley & u have 2 b guided 2 the entrance by another patron else the door is almost a secret. Not all these r un Detroit, a shame, liked them. Alterations 2 the story, I felt the heavy sex scenes herein pretty heated! I feel 1 story is more like prose & mat leave some folks a bit displeased. Actors weren't all folks I'd seek out 4 more of the same sad to say. Thanks 🧙🏻♀️🐈🐾🐾🐾🐾

Sea Legs
I didn't want to leave a review for this short story collection. The only reason not to leave a review is the exact reason I am leaving a review. The short story called Sea Legs tore me completely apart. And I was pissed about it. I took a few moments and realized that having a short story tear me so wide open deserves a nod. Well written and perfectly performed. Yes, I didn't like how I felt, but that is exactly what stories are supposed to do. They are made to take us places we have never been. Like it or not! Great job!

Caliente!
The reason for the "caliente" title, the first few story were, well, HOT and nicely erotic. Granted, I loved the whole audio book, but those first few were superb. I'll let everyone else draw their own conclusions about the stories. Enjoy!
