Resumen del Editor

A gripping literary horror novel about the death of a haunted town

On winter solstice, the birds disappeared, and the mist arrived.

The inhabitants of Nebulah quickly learn not to venture out after dark. But it is hard to stay indoors: Cabin fever sets in, and the mist can be beguiling too.

Eventually only six remain. Like the rest of the townspeople, Pete has nowhere else to go. After he rescues a stranded psychic from a terrible fate, he’s given a warning: He will be dead by solstice unless he leaves town - soon.

Great writing

The story was great, but it was the writing that hooked me. I can’t wait to see what else this author writes in the coming years; something tells me she’s just getting started!

Excellent

This was a fabulous story that I just couldn’t stop listening to. I’ll be a repeat listener for certain. Excellent story, characters you get attached to, and I was sad when it finally came to an end.

The Mist Down under, what a hoot!

An enjoyable little tale of a town trapped in a devilish nightly mist. It does get spooky in spots but is mostly about people and their reactions to the inexplicable in both the natural and supernatural world. Thought provoking and easy listen, the latter thanks to excellent narration that brings all the characters to life...even when they are not, strictly speaking, alive.
My one complaint would be that the last few minutes of the conclusion do not really work. I think the goal is to leave some question as to what really happened but to avoid spoilers, constant listener, I will leave that bit to your judgement

Couldn't have been better!

This was an excellent book. Highly recommend. It was scary and thrilling and well written and well narrated. My husband kept asking me if I was ok because I was listening on bluetooth and was verbally responding to things as they happened, and gasping and "oh my gods" and "what the heck", kept him thinking I was talking to him, lol. But really, a great book, will be purchasing a written copy for my collection...

Great Book, Best I’ve Read (Listened to in awhile)

This book came as a great surprise since I had never heard of it before. Gave it a chance and it found it well worth the time. It reminds me conceptually of Stephen King’s ”The Mist”, Brian Keene’s “Darkness on the Edge of Town” or the John Carpenter movie “The Fog”. It takes place in a small Australia town and the author really gives you the feel of life there and the characters who live there before the Night Mist started. The writing seems very well done (at least to a non writer). The characters are detailed and interesting and I get the impression the book would have been interesting even without the creepy mysterious mist and the horror it brings. Luckily you get both a great horror story and characters that have depth which is rare even in great books in this genre. What I enjoyed most and one of the major differences between the books and movie I mentioned above is that this story takes place over a long period of time and not just when the Mist first appears. It takes you from before the Mist, when the Mist shows up and later when the Mist has been around long enough to go from front page news and the object of study to old news and just another scientific curiosity. If anyone knows of any similar storylines let me know.

It hit me where it hurts and I love it.

I am bewildered by how deeply emotional and human this novel got, Murphy's tale it so much more than just a ghost story. The true, underlying horror is that we all have to confront ourselves before death, and ask if we lead a good life -- who did we hurt along the way, and to what extent are we a victim of circumstance? How long can we stand our own guilt and dissonance before we open the door, and get torn to pieces by the unfettered truth?

The editing is a bit choppy, but the voice acting is never 'bad', there are just some gaps in audio that are a bit annoying and disruptive. All in all it doesn't take away from how this story affected me (especially as someone who was reared in a dying and forgotten part of rural America).

Well-written, great narration, poor ending

My review heading is mostly self-explanatory. The poor ending comment is because, while there is a definite ending, there are no answers regarding the premise of the book. I don’t mind some nebulousness (pun partly intended) but some questions need to be answered for me to get satisfaction from a book. Why did the mist appear? What was its purpose? Was the main character’s role to simply provide a personal point of view or was he the reason for the mist’s existence? Or was the town (Nebula) the reason? In either case, why? Two factors contribute to my overall satisfaction with a book: engagement in the story, the language, and the characters (and the narrator in the case of an audible book), enough to want to keep reading without regard to whatever the ending may be; and a satisfying and mostly if not totally ( I’m okay with having to draw some inferences) conclusive ending. The first requirement was met. Disappointingly, the second was not.

An awesome ending

I didn’t think this title was scary but I did find it to be a compelling story with a great narrator. But the conclusion was an especially nice finishing touch. It made me appreciate the layout of the plot all the more.

Could not get into it

I didn’t like many of the characters and the premise didn’t seem completely convincing. The performance helped but wasn’t enough for me to really enjoy it.

Lots of filler

Overall it was kind of boring. There were a few interesting parts and the end was pretty great but there seemed to be ALOT of filler in between the holiday trip and the climax at the end...
The narrator did a fantastic job though.
