Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Publisher's Summary
A gripping literary horror novel about the death of a haunted town
On winter solstice, the birds disappeared, and the mist arrived.
The inhabitants of Nebulah quickly learn not to venture out after dark. But it is hard to stay indoors: Cabin fever sets in, and the mist can be beguiling too.
Eventually only six remain. Like the rest of the townspeople, Pete has nowhere else to go. After he rescues a stranded psychic from a terrible fate, he’s given a warning: He will be dead by solstice unless he leaves town - soon.

👎The Edits Are HORRIBLE & A LOT🤬
I thought the story was going pretty good (very hard to get into the story though...VERY HARD) & the narrator was great....here comes the BUT....
The editing IS JUST GOD AWFUL!!
This book has more edits then well over 100 books I've listened to....EVER!!
You can tell the difference in the original recording and the edited parts, which tend to be every freaking 15 minutes😂
No kidding either!
There are many parts too, where the last word at the end of a sentence gets cut COMPLETELY off as if he didn't finish the last word in that sentence.
They OBVIOUSLY did NOT use either, the same mic or program to re-record mistakes. This issue made it VERY EASY to HEAR the difference and it interrupts the flow of the story EVERYTIME!!
It made it extremely annoying & distracting!
The narrator did great with his voice acting & I loved his accent.
I can't blame the narrator for all the edits, even if he is the one that caused them...because if a book is edited correctly you should NOT hear the added edited parts....CLEARLY!
With that being said, I gave the narrator 5 stars...he deserves it a the very least.
Absolutely the worst editing EVER!!
I do recommend David Linski as a narrator. 👍
I recommend the story, (here comes the but again) BUT...DON'T GET THIS AUDIBLE version!!👎

The Good, The Bad, and Overall...
The Good: Outstanding character development and interactions. Well rounded characters with quirks and personalities, and not 2 dimensional - non paper thin. Interesting premise that draws you into the story.
The Bad: This is basically a 1980's horror flick. The mist/fog is never explained, lots of reporters and would be book authors plague the remaining inhabitants - though they never come to investigate the phenomena on their own, no one outside of the town believes anything is amidst (not a mist) and the locals never think to make recordings of the voices or record video on their phones. The title is based upon a psychic prediction that never really accomplishes anything. When the author needs to pluck the empathy heart strings she kills a dog. Standard 1980's movie ending - everything is fine and happy music plays to let you know it is all over; until Da! Da! Daaaaa!
Overall: It's a very unsatisfying story. No closure, rules that apply throughout the story do not apply at the end. Made more so by the outstanding (really) character development. This could have been epic. Free on Audible Plus... so... there's that.

Major hits and some bad misses
First 2/3 of this book is well written and mostly a setup for the characters but rite as it feels like its really into its groove the writer seemed to fall into that very predictable trap of rushing the ending. i would have given it 4 stars up until the last few pages. I felt it got lazy and to tidy of an ending which ironically caused more questions than answers, which will never be answered because of the randomness of the answers that need to be answered.
again first 2/3 rds of the book 9 out of 10 last 1/3 3 out of 10

Very boring
I had high hopes for this book, but there was really no suspense. It just kept droning on. The narrator was good, the characters were likeable. I appreciated the absence of extreme gore, sex, or language. But that didnt save this sleeper. It does feel too close to Stephen King's The Mist to be considered as a quality work. I would like to see more from this author if they could work on the plot a bit more and add some drama.

FINE NARRATION WASNT ABLE TO SAVE THIS WEAK STORY
I had to do other things while listening to this because it was so slow & dragged out just to make the book longer. I liked the characters & this could have been a great story if it was three or four hours shorter. It was suspenseful at times but I never really knew what was going on in that town. I was happy when it ended. I listen to about four full length books a week & usually I don’t want them to end. This one was different. Should have been a nice short novella. We wouldn’t have missed much.

A really engrossing tale from an author I’d life to see more from
This story bad echoes of some of the horror greats but also showed enough of the author, particularly their wonderful character development. The story is well paced and the characters are believable as well. When I started this yesterday I didn’t put it down ((or take it out of my ears) until it was finished.
My only knock on the book comes w the ending, which felt a bit off and rushed for me compared to the rest. I admit though that this seemed to be less about the book and more about the medium I chose - audio vs reading - that lended itself to that feeling. If I was reading it I’m sure I would have picked up on some things a bit faster but with audio I had to go back to review. Overall a wonderful book.

Brilliant narration
Wow!! Can't say enough about the story and David Linski's narration read with honesty and heart.
This like Duma Key will be one audio book I'll come back to many times over the years. I hope Mr Linski reads more in this genre as he brought life to each character and he never overplayed for impact the main characters struggles which echo throughout the book. I'd like to thank him and the author.

I found this gripping throughout with the simple character interactions and the narrators introspection as the more direct 'action' sections. The closing two hours however had me on the of my seat. A warm and heartfelt narration made me feel I knew the residents of Nebulah myself. Loved it

A great akin to King
It'd be difficult to not compare this to a King novel - a dead (or close enough) town with night time horrors building on personal demons with a pretty beautiful way with words. The few central characters have fair depth (though some peripheral ones fall quite flat) and are in no way perfect. Themes of loss, regret and unglamorous survival feel authentic. I reckon the inevitable comparisons to King (think Salem's Lot especially) might be both a curse and a blessing. Absolutely on the better end of the free-to-subscribers horror with its faults but also actual tension imho. I'd probably rate between 3.5 and 4 stars (some to be docked for the audio, I don't know why, but at times it sounds like they got another person to patch up the narration for a few seconds?)

Interesting take on the haunted house (a haunted town) with unusual location giving freshness and a dark creepy quality... Left me with a shiver and a need to immediately listen to a bit of light comedy lest my dreams be effected.... Days later its still in my head, whereas many other novels are quickly forgotten. Recommended highly.

A Gem of an Aussie Tale
Soon had me hooked from the two minute mark. The Narrator's dry and distinct storytelling transforms in a snap into an eerie soundscape that chilled me like no other audiobooks has. The story is gripping and richly embroidered with detail both horrifying and beautiful. You won't forget the ending.

Great Aussie Story but frustrating ending.
Thoroughly enjoyed the narration and 99% of the story.
Not going to spoil the ending. However, the ending does not suit a first person narrative, and leads to much frustration. This type of ending may work in a movie but not in a book.
Overall give it a go, despite the “ending”.

Good story. Shame about production quality.
Definitely a good read. Codos to author and the narration is done quite well.
My major gripe with this audio book is the disgraceful editing and production. Author re reads of some lines both left in final edit. (Did the even proof read/listen to the final work? I doubt it).
often the sound of the recording changes back and forth in one paragraph. It's like the were recoded in 2 different studios. One professional and the other at a home pc. Then spliced together.
You would be better off just reading the printed book.
This recorded version is not due to bad voice acting but mainly the production team.

seriously spooky
A unique story that's a bit of a slow burn. My only criticism is how abruptly it ends leaving many of the plot points unanswered

This book a sleeper hit
I was riveted from the get go with this book. The story was fantastic and the town setting haunting. Lots of classic Aussie smatterings of life put in and the narrator really nails the dialogue and colloquialisms. Give this one a go I hope it captures your attention and gives you some insite into a small Aussie town. Sans the ghost parts it's basically small town life
Full body chills for the ending. What a way to end it.

Swarming from their prison, they multiply and thrive. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. Deaf for many years, Ally knows how to live in silence. Now, it is her family's only chance of survival. They must leave their home, shun others, and find a remote haven where they can sit out the plague. But will it ever end? And what kind of world will be left?

Story
From the mind of the man Stephen King calls "a master of the macabre", comes a brilliant new collection of no-punches-pulled horror stories, some never-before-collected and many originals that have never been published anywhere before. Bentley Little can take the innocuous, twist it around, and write a story that will change your way of thinking. Walking Alone: Short Stories is a shining example of his talent to scare you, creep you out, and make you shudder.
