An empowering treatise on propelling profound social change by going inward, from a mindfulness teacher and activist who has turned personal practice into movements.

The practice of mindfulness is most often touted for its profound mind, body, and spirit benefits. Shelly Tygielski here shows that mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for spurring transformative collective action. In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

As she used self-help practices to heal from chronic health issues and a messy divorce, she had an epiphany: Finding true health and peace is not a solo endeavor, but one that lives in connection with others. Tygielski considers herself an unlikely meditator, activist, and teacher. But in that way she is uniquely qualified to speak to all today who wonder, “What can I do?” or “Will my actions even make a difference?”. Tygielski’s work began as “me” work and transformed into “we” work. In Sit Down to Rise Up, she shows that this is possible for all of us.

"Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World" is the book you need and if you haven’t heard - have yet to discover. I’m thankful to discover and fulfill this need through a beautifully written and narrated book by Shelly Tyglieski.

In Shelly’s book, I found a voice that echoed many truths held in my heart to make a more equitable, healthier World. I admired Shelly's work prior to listening to Sit Down to Rise Up. But, I found a deeper connection to a like-minded being as I listened.

I believe Sit Down to Rise Up should be listened to as much as read. Shelly’s voice is comforting, her message is clear and simple, and her understanding is thoughtful. And, most importantly, her intentions are relatable - helping others and ourselves.

If you are unfamiliar with Shelly, she is the power behind an ecosystem that raised a card of love, Pandemic of Love, in the midst of disaster. Sit Down to Rise Up tells how Shelly managed to help millions across the World to connect helpers, those in need of help and those wanting to connect and volunteer in the midst of the current global crisis. It is more than an autobiographical account of Shelly’s success in changing lives. Sit Down to Rise Up is also a guide to empower those seeking to help others and needing inspiration and knowledge to fulfill this need through a beautifully written and narrated book by Shelly Tyglieski.

Pandemic of Love is not Shelly’s first effort to help others seeking shelter from the sandstorms of life. She tells moving stories of helping children in need of music supplies with her child and his friend, helping those managing trauma, social justice and solidarity, compassion and inclusion, and building a sand tribe mutual-aid community.

But these stories of helping others are just part of the beauty of Sit Down to Rise Up. The deeper beauty of this book is the heart of a woman who used a second birth to reawaken to live authentically following great losses and challenges.

I read Sit Down to Rise Up through the lens of an artist, attorney, climate activist, humanitarian and wellbeing coach involved in self-care and communal care. I’ve helped many and experienced much. In Shelly’s book, I received inspiration through a deeper connection to an amazing being. I received more than beautiful, thoughtful reflections. I received an increased appreciation in my ability to create a better World for myself and others.

I recommend Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World 110%. Buy the book and thank yourself for investing in your wellbeing. I hope you'll also be inspired in your ability to help create a kinder, gentler and giving World.

Breathe Well,
Arlene JM Grant, Esq.

Shelly’s vulnerability is refreshing as she openly talks about low points in her life and how she leaned on community to lift herself up. She talks about examples of where her contributions to help others had a significant positive impact on her self worth. In my opinion, her views about setting intentions are spot on with Oprah’s teachings.
This book is for anyone who seeks an uplifting story and has an open mind about change for themselves and the world to help achieve peace, equality and joy.
