Resumen del Editor

An urgent manifesto and a dramatic memoir of awakening, this is the story of revolutionary love.

Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize

"In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom." (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love)

How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur - renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer - describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know. Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change: It is a practice that can transform a relationship, a community, a culture, even a nation.

Kaur takes listeners through her own riveting journey - as a brown girl growing up in California farmland finding her place in the world; as a young adult galvanized by the murders of Sikhs after 9/11; as a law student fighting injustices in American prisons and on Guantánamo Bay; as an activist working with communities recovering from xenophobic attacks; and as a woman trying to heal from her own experiences with police violence and sexual assault. Drawing from the wisdom of sages, scientists, and activists, Kaur reclaims love as an active, public, and revolutionary force that creates new possibilities for ourselves, our communities, and our world.

See No Stranger helps us imagine new ways of being with each other - and with ourselves - so that together we can begin to build the world we want to see.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“This is the book we have been waiting for. It is a guide for anyone who believes that politics alone will not solve our current cultural and spiritual crisis. This book calls us up and calls us into the hard and necessary work to heal our wounds and reimagine the world. Providing a real framework for understanding and practicing revolutionary love, this book points the way through division and despair to a future where all people can have a place of dignity.” (Van Jones, CEO of REFORM Alliance and CNN host)

“This book and the woman who gave birth to it have so much to offer the struggle for peace and justice as we move into a most complex and crucial century. Open up your heart as you open these pages and let yourself be inspired and invigorated by the way Ms. Kaur breaks it down.” (Ani DiFranco)

“A soulful memoir mined in the stories of race, gender, Sikh wisdom, and love - where the personal and political merge and spirit and action emerge.... Valarie Kaur is a visionary worker for justice and this book is her radiant offering.” (Eve Ensler)

More than manifesto

This book is more than the sum of its parts. It is autobiography, manifesto, and perhaps most import, nourishment for the hard labor of love that this time and this world require. You will be inspired and healed in the hearing of it.

Powerful story telling and messages

This author is an intelligent, well spoken and incredible storyteller. She brings him into the story and often bring tears to your eyes. With her sincerity and truth, I learned so much about the Sikh culture and religion. So many soft, provoking and deep topic. Love this book and would recommend it to any of my female friends and many of my more open male friends as well.

A critical mindmap and heartmap for our times

Valarie Kaur has laid bare her soul and her divine calling to transform this world with a collective labor of love. She gives a map on how we make good on American ideals. Having her voice read, sing, tremble and shake along the audiobook journey is a precious gift. This is the best book I've read in years, and a primer for American civic engagement. I am profoundly grateful for it.

The ratings are correct

I stumbled across a few quotes by Valerie Kaur on the internet and wanted to investigate more. She wrote a very engaging memoir. If you are feeling overwhelmed by racism, sexism and homophobia and don't know where to start, this is a great book that encouraged engagement and self-care. I learned so much about the discrimination felt by Muslim and Sikh communities. The book, however, does not leave you in a pit of despair. It gives some hope and insight into how to engage without burning out.

Outstanding

This is one of the best, most poignant books I’ve ever read that addresses the challenges and possibilities of modern day activism. This book is for seekers dedicated to building a better world in a sustainable way.

Kaur’s reading of her own work is wonderful and expressive and really adds to the text. I especially love the songs and phrases that she sings aloud in the audiobook version.

Beautiful articulation of the underside of America

The Author’s infusion of Open hearted emotion combined with clear articulation of cultural problems and accessible antidotes is well worth everyone’s time. Particularly if you are curious about how to move forward and heal the painful past and unnecessary divisiveness in the United States of America.
