Publisher's Summary

The first book in the Shady Hollow series, in which we are introduced to the village of Shady Hollow, a place where woodland creatures live together in harmony - until a curmudgeonly toad turns up dead and the local reporter has to solve the case.

Reporter Vera Vixen is a relative newcomer to Shady Hollow. The fox has a nose for news, so when she catches wind that the death might be a murder, she resolves to get to the bottom of the case, no matter where it leads. As she stirs up still waters, the fox exposes more than one mystery, and discovers that additional lives are in jeopardy.

Vera finds more to this town than she ever suspected. It seems someone in the Hollow will do anything to keep her from solving the murder, and soon it will take all of Vera’s cunning and quickness to crack the case.

easy listen

Entertaining narration, but the characters are oddly stereotypical (fox is clever, racoons is theif, etc.) Pretty classic murder mystery story full of traditional gender roles and slut shaming. The males work so hard and just need a break from their harpy wives. Same old same old. if not for the great voice acting and short length, I would have stopped listening.

Why the critters?

The plot was good
The animal thing stupid
I just pretend they were people because it was too disturbing to think of some of the cross species romances

Cozy murder meets animal crossing

Trigger warning: mildly racist undertones. Murder, obviously.

Cute and cozy murder mystery. Characters are easy to understand but hard to pin down.
A very minor romantic subplot doesn’t detract from the story.

Not hard or taxing to enjoy. Vocabulary and sentence structure is mostly approachable and easy. Good for a beach, plane, or rainy day.

Animal crossing Murder Mystery

Is it cheesy at times? Yes, but that’s what makes this book so cozy.
If you like animal crossing & murder mysteries, don’t walk run to get this book.

Absolutely delightful!

A thoroughly enjoyable listen. A cozy mystery combined with a town full of delightful animals. I can't praise Cassandra Campbell enough as a narrator. She deftly switches from voice to voice bringing each character alive. She is always an engaging and expressive narrator.

Just Right

Shady Hollow does exactly what it sets out to do. It is a sweet, cozy mystery that plays upon the inherent natures of animals. I listened to it while wrapping holiday gifts and it was perfect. I’m looking forward to listening to the next one.

Cute, Cozy Mystery. Love Me Some "Old Lady" Books.

Welcome to Shady Hollow: a quaint little town of anthropomorphic creatures, where bad stuff happens so rarely- the residents don't even have locks on their doors! Life's grand until one day one of the townsfolk turns up dead. Whaaaaat? Cute, cozy mystery. A delightfully enchanting fall read.
