What you really need to know about Self Defense

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, I would recommend this book to a friend, especially someone interested in real self defense and to gain more knowledge in the martial arts.

What did you like best about this story?

Down to earth, good information. Many martial artists spend years to learn what this book has to offer. I recommend anyone looking to get into the martial arts read this book first. It offers a real perspective of what you need to know. Don't go blindly and sign up for a karate or MMA class. Give your self the proper information to be able to take charge of your self defense training. This is so important!

Which scene was your favorite?

Each section has good nuggets of information. I plan to re-listen to many of these chapters to properly absorb the information.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Like good food, enjoy it by the bite.

Any additional comments?

FYI, I was offered this book to read/listen to for free for a fair evaluation and review. Yeah, yeah, another martial arts/self defense book. Ok, I'll check it out. I was pleasantly surprised that I agree with everything I read and highly recommend anyone interested in self defense and martial arts, read this book. I have studied Tae Kwan Do, Okinawan Shuri-Ryu, Japanese Shotokan karate, as well as boxed in college. Bruce Lee always said not to get too caught up in a style, since this will limit you. Take what you get from many sources and mold these techniques to your particular style and abilities. This book gets into the psychology of self defense and offers tools to the novice and expert in how to better defend yourself in an adverse situation. Trust me, every word in this book is important. Just the information you need, no fluff. I would really liked to have had an instructor who had been able to provide this type of information and training over the years. My hat is off to Neal Martin for taking time to provide us with this practice perspective. Also, thanks to Paul Holbrook for putting this to words.

Use of language is unprofessional.

Due to the fact that the author uses violent swearing to get his point across or to explain his self-talk or motivation deserves an edit, and one of the key reasons I will not recommend this book to any of my students for guidance in self-defence. The quality of your life depends on the quality of your communication.
As a positive, his use of the word FEAR as either meaning "forget everything and run" or "face everything and rise" is a very good acronym.
