My Prison without Bars is a courageous and harrowing journey through the catacombs of hell, from the mind and voice of a little girl, living with her own monster underneath her bed. Written in first person, this novel is not a memoir, but more a psychological thriller based on true events; chronicling one woman's attempt to claw her way out of the darkness of Child Sexual Abuse, while struggling to find normal, in a not-so-normal world. It is poignant, dark and graphic; not for the faint of heart.

Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Stephen Smith is the boy who did not exist. Born out of wedlock in the early 1960s, Steve's parents - both devout Catholics - had felt so 'shamed' by their son's illegitimate birth that they hid him away from the world by locking him in the cellar...for 13 years. Apart from a few admissions to hospital as a result of his 'imprisonment', Steve remained in the coal cellar of the family home where he was deprived of daylight, his childhood, school and human contact until he'd reached his teenage years.

Publisher's summary
You're not going home. You're not going anywhere. You're mine now.
Growing up in a deeply troubled family, 15-year-old Anna felt lost and alone in the world. So when a friendly taxi driver befriended her, Anna welcomed the attention, and agreed to go home with him to meet his family. She wouldn't escape for over a decade.
Held captive by a sadistic pedophile, Anna was subjected to despicable levels of sexual abuse and torture. The unrelenting violence and degradation resulted in numerous miscarriages, and the birth of four babies.... each one stolen away from Anna at birth.
Her salvation arrived 13 years too late, but despite her shattered mind and body, Anna finally managed to flee. This is her harrowing, yet uplifting, true story of survival.
Contains mature themes.

So unrealistic
I have read a lot of true stories. This one seems so far-fetched I have a very hard time believing most of it. There were way too many inconsistencies and questions left, and not one person to corroborate anything at all. (The one social worker who saved her was fired and is not allowed to speak with her, even at her new job?)
The writer seems to fixate so much on graphic rape and violence to the point of monotony. This is why I'm a little perplexed as too why I have seen so many five star reviews of this book!

Kept me on edge
This true story kept me on the edge of my set from beginning to end. She shared the greatest amount of detail. Horrible nightmare was her reality, 13 years. My heart goes out to her. I wanted to go through the story and strangle that intire clan full of evil demented people.
I cried for her, and prayed throughout the story. None of what happened to you Darling was your fault. I will continue to be praying for you, an pray that you gain the strength to bring your abuser to justice! God Bless you, Darling!

It says it’s based on a true story but so much feels off
The majority of the book is just describing rapes but leaves out so much of her life inside the house. And so much doesn’t add up. For example she describes how excited she is to bathe like a year after she’d been kidnapped, had she not been able to wash herself in any way? Why was her grandpa at home while the grandmas wake is happening at the church with the whole family there? Why didn’t the other woman who escaped send police? Wouldn’t the obgyn have noticed the trauma scars all over her genitals and ask about it? Oh my goodness freaking JAMIE shows up out of nowhere at the end IN UNIFORM just tada “its been a decade and I still love my 2 date girlfriend from 15, let’s move in together”

Why wouldn't you?
the story keeps your attention the fact that this is based on a true story and she never went to the police when she was free is the reason I've gave it a four-star because that's the least she could have done so that other girls did not fall in the hands of this monster.

This story is full of contradictions
when she finally escapes, it has been supposedly 13 years, yet she says shes 20. I can't begin to count the number of absolutely unbelievable happenings/contradictions in this book. it was very hard to get through. I don't believe everything in this book is true. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

An extremely hard listen
I have listened to many books describing horrific life ordeals, this one though, was an extremely hard one to listen to! Yet I couldn’t stop because I needed to know that this little girl has found a way out! My heart goes to her, and to all people suffering abuse. I gave the story only 2 starts because it seemed inappropriate to give it a high rating considering how bad the little girl suffered. 5 starts for her courage to speak up and put it in writing. I just hope that she would summon the courage to seek justice for herself.

My heart ached listening to this ladies horrible "life" how she trudged on just biding her time to set out her escape, Many men or women would have given up with life after experiencing all of this but thank you Anna for giving us an insight as to what you want through :( but I'm so happy she has now found her love, who she always kept that place in her heart for him 😘

Shocking!!!
Shocking that even all those years ago no one noticed or if they did they turned a blind eye. It’s a shame that back then and even today things like this can go on and is disguised by way of culture so many do not ask questions as it’s accepted. Very good book and good narrator. Good to listen to.

Very sad but interesting story.
Well read and written!!
Enjoyed the book, although that seems the wrong description under the circumstances of poor Anna's ordeal
.A very strong and brave lady.Although I think that her age was refered to wrongky a couple of times in chapter 26. When Sally was going to the market, Anna refers to herself as a Twenty year old woman which of course she couldn't have been if she was 15 when she was taken and escapedv13 years later. And I think there was another reference in the same chapter.
Not that this affects the impact of the story in any way, just thought I would mention it in case the editor was not aware of the mistake.

it's the most incredible story I've heard 💔💔💔💔
absolutely 100% so so hard to listen to.... especially the concept to detail of the severity of this NOT JUST BRAVE, UNDENIABLY THE STRONGEST WOMAN PROBABLY KNOW N TO THIS EVIL WORLD, BUT THE MOST DRIVEN, INSPIRATIONAL HUMAN IVE EVER ❤️ HEARD OF, NO ACTUALLY THE LADY I NOW KNOW, AS I HAVE DEFINITELY, OVER THE PERIOD OF HEARING THIS I KNOW HER......!!!
BUT THE HARDEST PART FOR ME IS THAT ITS THE CLOSEST TO MY ACTUAL LIFE, FROM THE MOMENT I WAS BORN TO THIS HELL PEOPLE CALL LIFE, IT HAS BEEN ALL IVE KNOWN AND DISGUSTINGLY PAINFUL ABUSE, NEGLECT I SUFFERED AND AM STILL SUFFERING 💙 💔THIS LIFE I AM STILL TRAPPED IN AND LIVING TO THIS DAY STILL 💔 😢
SO ITS HELPED ME MORE THAT PROBABLY ANYONE WHO HAS OR IS LISTENING TO THIS AS I WRITE THIS SO THANK YOU GIRL 👧 💗 💓 BUT ALSO I HOPE MY DAY COMES OF RELEASE FROM THIS COMES SOON, I HOPE THAT ME HEARING THIS IS A SIGN FROM GOD THAT MY HELL IS GOING TO STOP SOON..!!! I PRAY 🙏 🤲 🕍 🕌 ⛪️

Evil Culture
This is a perfect illustration of the contempt that Pakistani men have for white girls. Disgusting and harrowing read but essential that this sort of thing needs to be voiced.
Great narration and well done for your bravery in recounting this story.

This Story Has Never Been Corroborated
Firstly, if this story is indeed true, then I am very sorry for the author. But with that said, much of how this story is written seems fabricated.
I have read many auto/biographies dealing with this subject matter and there is something about this particular story that seems a bit off.
Because of my suspicions that at least part of this story is pure fantasy, a few chapters into this book I decided to do some further research.
There seems to be no available evidence that the author’s story has ever been corroborated by any independent witnesses and the author has never gone to the police.
I believe this novel may be a collage of other real victim’s experiences poorly written into a single story and sold as the author’s own.
This is just my opinion so please do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

Warning: Graphic scenes of abuse
I couldn't get past the first few chapters. Absolutely terrible what this girl had to endure, but it should come with some sort of warning for how graphic it is. I've read a lot of harrowing things before, but this was just too much. Returning.

heavy but well written
it's hard to rate a book that's based on such an horrific experience but in respect to the author, it was well written.
my rating is based on that and not the content.
the narrator did an amazing job separating characters as well.
not for anyone under 18 or anyone who suffers PTSD from similar trauma as this would be highly triggering.

Fiction which devalues real kidnapping stories
Honestly this is either the greatest story of survival and resilience ever told or a completely fabricated account which devalues the horrific stories of people who really have been kidnapped and treated terribly. No-one could survive 13 years of this treatment... you be the judge.

Don’t fall for this story
I started listening to this audiobook, believing that it was based on a true story. However, after a few chapters of unrelenting lurid, graphic descriptions of perverted physical violence and sexual abuse , I could not listen to any more. The story was making me feel ill. I listened to the final chapters, the description of the “escape “ and amazing reunion with a lost acquaintance from the previous 13 years, when I realised that this sounded like a completely contrived story. The imprisonment was not reported to the police and there is no evidence of the woman’s claims, In short, is this a scam?

Didn't ring true.
Spoilers Alert: I have to wonder how much of this is a real story and how much was a work of fiction. There is no record anywhere of these events being corraborated. There are also certain aspects of the storythat don't ring true. She was left alone in the hospital for a long time and not once told anyone. Her description of the noises the snake makes is odd. As a snake owner I know they are very quiet animals and are not activly running around their enclosures hissing. They also don't eat bits of cooked meat. they need whole prey.
She has so many horrific injuries and bushes with death. It's amazing she got out alive at all.
She has 4 children taken from her and yet continues to want to have more children. Not once does she seem to give any thought to the lives and trauma those children were going to be subjected to growing up in such an environment.
Then even after she decided she had to get out she was once again taken to the hospital and once again does nothing to escape while presented with another perfect opertunity.
Finally she manages to get someone to wait outside in a car based off a note she slips her. Then the door just happens to be unlocked despite this only ever happening once in the last 13 years. Nice coincidence.
I am well aware that in such situations people do not act rationally. I have read many similar accounts including knowing two people who escaped a similar horrific experience and this just didn't read like a real account. It seemed very focused on giving a lot of repetitive gore to the reader.
I fully believe that many of these horrific events have happened to a lot of women and it's utterly horrific. But this story read more like fiction than reality and passing it off as such is a little dodgy.
I imagine it could be based on someone from the Rochdale child sex abuse ring. That would fit, but I think it would be a loose association.
The ending too was all just a bit to Oh Jolly Jockey Stick. But I won't ruin everything for you if you still want to read it.

Unbelievable story
This was a story you will not soon forget filled with the most evil treatment of an innocent child at the hands of a disgusting excuse for a human being & his family who are equally as evil. No one should ever have to have lived these horrors. Please take the time and listen to Anna’s story. She is one incredible woman.

Slightly disappointed
It was almost as though I could hear a fish tank or some type of trickling water in the background throughout. At the risk of victim blaming, its frustrating at times throughout listening to the amount of missed opportunities, but I suppose no one could understand until they were in that position.

Sounds fake
I don't want to victim shame or deny anybodys truth in any way so I'm hesitant to comment but this story is very real and very painful for many people and this reads like fiction. I'm sorry in advance.
