Story
We were 16 the night she was violently assaulted while I helplessly watched. I’ll never forget the sounds of her suffering. Or my inconsolable agony when she left Oklahoma. Years later, she returns to honor our teenage pact. Except the boy she loved is gone, replaced by a ruthless cattle rancher knotted with secrets. Story
The stories were all wrong—Hook was never the villain. For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken. Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked. But it’s pointless. Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!
I'm almost exclusively audio, so there are *very* few books I read in print anymore. I read this one before it was released on audio, but I purchased the audio immediately. Roxy Isles performed this story perfectly! I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!
Let me just give you a list of the things I loved... off the top of my head...
1. Strong heroine. Holy crap does this woman have the fortitude of the toughest men.
2. Action packed. From the very beginning this tale starts off with a chase and never slows down the entire story.
3. A bad-boy hero that chases her to the ends of the earth because he *knows* he wants only her. And she knows he will always come for her.
4. A good-guy hero that isn't all *that* good. He can't help but push away from her, and then be drawn right back in.
5. Friends that have her back. Forever. No matter what.
6. Villains aplenty. I like that you aren't stuck hating one character through the whole story.
7. **********. Something I can't mention because it's a spoiler. But HOT AF!
8. Creative solutions to problems that seem like a dead end. Where does the author come up with some of this stuff???
9. Pirate theme. I grew up reading Johanna Lindsey's pirate romances and I just don't find the recent books to be as enjoyable. You will feel like you are onboard the ship right next to them!
10. A DAMN FINE, nay, PERFECT ending!
Did I mention that I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!!!

NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!
***Warning***
If you're sensitive to violence, rape, abuse, torture, manipulation, the deepest grief and longing.... as well as wicked sexual plays, do not enter!
This story has a badass pirate heroine who saw her own pirate father hang and her mother jumping out from a cliff because of her grief - just shortly after Bennett herself gutted a 40 year old man who tried to rape her. At that time she is just 14 years old.
That's how the story of Bennett Sharp, female pirate Captain in the Westindia Seas in the 1800s. Slavery and pirating is at the top of any seaman's career, and in all that, she meets her husband Priest whom has betrayed her and loves another.
Bennett runs from him,and 2 years later, runs into him again. But this time she is his captor, and she cannot forgive him.
That's when things get interesting, because Bennett parts ways with her crew to make a ruse for the English Navy ship and its captain, Ashley Cutler.
First enemies, then lovers. Trying to escape, but suddenly falling in love? What to do?
Before she has a plan she is taken on to another ship and being abused so horribly that I had trouble not living and breathing beside her.
From one captor to another, from one abuser to another - until it all ends in happy ever after - but in a different way that I was used to.
This story packs a punch. 15 hours of gruesome violence, heartbreaking and heartwrenching love, longing, rejection, the fulfillment of the ultimate love story. An unexpected twist, secrets revealed and a bounty hunt.
I honestly don't know what else you could want from a story about pirates, love and the seven seas.
Plus - the narrator is simply amazing. She is worth your credit!

Twisted Desires!
OMG 😳Pam Godwin! This book is not for the faint of heart!! Bennett has endured and overcome more than anyone should ever experience. There is so much angst, betrayal, deception, and sacrifice throughout Bennett’s life that I wondered where she got the fortitude to move forward. Bennett’s dilemma of loving two men simultaneously, being a female pirate, and feeling the cruelty meted out by vicious human beings would have destroyed a lesser person. “Spoiler alert”🚨!! There was rape, graphic violence, and physical abuse throughout the story. Clare Corbett and Roxy Isles’ performance was phenomenal !! Her expressiveness allowed me to vividly picture each scene in my mind’s eye lending credibility throughout the entire audiobook!! I loved it 🥰😍🤩😍🥰❣️

mmf ending spoils entire experience
If you're going to hang your entire book on an mmf erotic bolt out of the blue that is completely unearned, with an mm twist that is profoundly distasteful, and then this constitutes your HEA . . . count me out.
The responsible thing to do would be to tell listeners that this is an important element of the story before they spend a credit on something they, to put it mildly, don't want to wallow in.

Seriously dark and disturbed
I took a serious wrong turn with this book. I purchased it blindly after a recommendation, but did not research beforehand. I had absolutely no idea what I was in for. Roxy Isles was amazing, but the story was seriously effed up, sick and depraved. The violence was extreme, and though horrified on a deep level, I kept listening to see what happened next the same way you are hypnotized into watching a car crash or train wreck. This was horrific, and disturbing on so many levels. Lesson learned though, I will never again blindly follow a recommendation.

OMG
Let me start by saying, if you have triggers, then this isn't the book for you. This book is full of abusive situations, rapes, belittling and humiliation....but it was a great read.
The ending MFM relationship that develops, I thought it was beautifully executed. I just wish we saw more of it.

Almost a solid 5 star
**spoiler alert** This would have easily been a 5 star review for me, except for the ending! I was very entertained, and couldn't put the book down. I haven't really read much in the "pirate" genre, so it was new and refreshing to me. The romance was great, but the plot was more interesting, which is exactly the balance I prefer.
The ending... I'm all for a MFM romance, but in this situation it felt like a cop-out so she didn't have to choose between Priest and Ashley. There were so many ways this could have been tidied up nicely, and the MFM twist was just not really one I loved.
I mean really... you were with Priest for a year on a boat in bed for the majority of the time and it never came up who you were a servant for or grew up with? I understand the secretive nature of their romantic relationship, but that is a rather large chunk of childhood to just omit completely. And I hate the miscommunication trope so maybe this is just that hatred coming through... but I found that part a little unbelievable.
Someone else said exactly what I was thinking too, and it came up in the book for a hot second about Bennett being the outsider in the relationship so that doesn't make it seem like a happy ending to me. Because no matter how they tried to not let her be the outsider, she just is due to memories and jokes... so yeah. Poor Bennett went through so much in this novel to not have a perfectly lovely ending where she is number one to no one else and not some third wheel. Not my favorite ending to a really great book!

Ooo my days
Please listen to this book! Gosh it is an emotional rollercoaster! You’ll laughing one minute and crying the next. The main character is strong and powerful but she still has her downfalls so she is a realist character that you cheer for. Please be warned that there are sensitive topics in this book so if you’re triggered then this book isn’t for you.

never mind sea of ruin, think I've been ruied
ruied for all other pirate romances that is! this is my first pirate romance and I'm not sure any others are going to live up to this one. yes I figured out the plot twist early on but that in no way detracted from the book. if you're used to dark romances and not offended by TW then its best to go in blind like I did. the resilience of the female character is astounding. i thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
Roxy Isles gives a truly fantastic performance, putting every ounce of feeling into each character and making them sound as individual as they where.

It would have been nice to get a sa tw before starting the book, hopefully I can at least warn others

Absolutely brilliant but be aware of the TWs
I loved the story and the spice is hot. But be advised that it gets pretty grim from time to time. There are some massive triggerwarnings with this one and passages that are hard to listen to.

great narrator, story definitely not for me
I didn't realise this was a dark romance, don't know if that's my fault, but don't think it was made very clear. Also, no trigger warnings for anything.
The story is rich and well researched, amazing attention to detail. But the male characters were not for me. Fair warning to anyone, the first sex scene in this book is not consensual. I had to stop there and turn off.

Made me breathless 💨
Marine erotica - that what was missing in my life. Apparently.
Plot full of my favorite pirate tropes like sea battles, hidden treasure, map to mentioned treasure, clever pirate deals, and more, combined with suspense of romantic entanglements kept me on the edge of my seat through almost entirety of this book.
Just one moment made me laugh out loud in disbelief, when one woman's orgasm become main point of attention of few hundred men. After that I really thought we will meet sirens at some points. What an imagination 😂

Loved it!!
Loved it! It just got better and better. I’ve hardly watched any tv since I started listening In favour of delving back into the story. I finished it within days. Loved the descriptions of everything/being out at sea. I love anything to do with the sea and it was nice to listen to before sleep. Incredible narrater! Filthy in parts. Best book I’ve listened to in ages, and really different too. You just didn’t know where it was heading. Brilliant!

My first pirate adventure
This was certainly out of my usual genre and I've got to say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
IMO the 'outcome' was fairly predictable but no less enjoyable for it.
I'd certainly recommend to others!

Brilliant!
It’s dark, dirty, and action packed with sexy pirates, mystery treasure, and treacherous seas. I loved the characters, especially Bennett, she’s amazing, as is the storyline. Historical romance isn’t my usual go to but Pam Godwin is so of course I had to read it; and I’m so happy that I did. I highly recommend it.

Wow!
Not for the faint hearted! Main female character is constantly in danger. A rollercoaster of action, adventure, violence and explicit sex. Be aware that there is rape and torture in this book. But it all ends with a HEA so was worth it. Narrator was fantastic and I was hooked from the first chapter.

Not what I expected
I was recommended this book by a friend so I gave it a go and stuck it out.
I found the story had holes in it and things that were given a lot of focus at the end were just kinda blown over. I also found some of the “romance” a little unrealistic with there back story.. it was a confusing book that just in parts didn’t make sense.
Also as I trigger warning there is rape in this book and quite a bit of it.
I personally wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone purely because it wasn’t for me.

Rare & Magic
I started this without reading the synopsis or tw's (advisable) based off a booktok recommendation for an enemies to lovers with a strong female mc. Understatement of the century lol! I felt the uncomfortable traumatic scenes were so well written that I was able to identify with the emotion of the mc and get through it. This book was one I devoured in one sitting. I had suspected the ending but the action packed adventure kept me hooked for the entire journey. The love story is something I could only dream of. Raw and beautiful. Love love loved it. CB.

Very upsetting
CW/TW for this book: Infidelity, Sexual Assault from both villains and love interests, Noncon, Dubcon, repeated graphic descriptions of Rape, Physical Assault and Torture against women.
This was not a book. It was torture porn. The insanely gratuitous violence committed against this female character was disgusting. I read books almost exclusively by female authors because for the most part they write good stories about women. This was not that. This was scene after scene of a what should have been a strong female lead facing trials and tribulations to come out the other side stronger however those trials and tribulations started with repeated sexual assault not only by the villains but by one of the love interests. Continued with truly graphic descriptions of rape and torture bringing her to the point of death countless times only to have the men ‘save’ her and do it all over again. All of this pain then leading to the main character choosing to forgive her adulterating husband and rapist disguised as a Dom lover because what they did didn’t seem as bad as everything else she went through….I don’t even know how to explain how upsetting that was.
I was under the impression that this would be a mfm romance but in a Pirates of the Caribbean setting, I added to my tbr because it was recommended on Booktok but no one mentioned just how many triggering themes were in this book. I’m just at a loss for what I was supposed to enjoy. I wanted to read a book about an awesome badass female pirate and her two lovers who would love and protect her above all else. This was not that.
I wish that audible would put content warnings on their books because if I knew them I wouldn’t have bothered reading it. We have rating systems for tv and movies and trigger warnings before the episode or movie. Why have we not adopted this practice with books? I know what I don’t like to read because it effects my mental health and if this had any kind of content warnings then I would have been able to steer clear of it. Unfortunately any new reader has to read all the comments to find out if there are triggering themes. This also leads to spoilers so either way the reader is at a disadvantage. I’m very disappointed.

What a hot book
Seriously, I could not stop . . . This book reminded me of the torturous historical romances I used to read back in the 80s - usually a pirate romance or some alpha male dominating a heroine. Bodice ripping stuff but an erotic step further. Thing is, this heroine truly gives as good as she gets - she is put through pure hell but I'd imagine that is kinda what women went through in the age of piracy! I did not expect to fall so in love with the pirate hunter, but their dark romance, their captor/captive love affair was seriously HOT! Whilst I enjoy MFM romance I am not too interested in MMF - this ended up being a bit in the middle (no pun intended) - so that part of it was okay but not great and the end got a bit sloppy. I think the words soul-crushing or heartwrenching come to mind when I think of this book - in particular the pirate hunter foreplay. Not sure but there is a darkness to the love captured here and it makes you ache! I had read the book before listening and whilst I enjoyed the performance I thought it could have been sexier - the voice just didn't match our adult heroine in my opinion.
