Publisher's Summary

Emperor Mollusk. Intergalactic Menace. Destroyer of Worlds. Conqueror of Other Worlds. Mad Genius. Ex-Warlord of Earth. Not bad for a guy without a spine. But what's a villain to do after he's done... everything.

With no new ambitions, he's happy to pitch in and solve the energy crisis or repel aliens invaders should the need arise, but if he had his way, he'd prefer to be left alone to explore the boundaries of dangerous science. Just as a hobby, of course. Retirement isn't easy though. If the boredom doesn't get him, there's always the Venusians. Or the Saturnites. Or the Mercurials. Or... well, you get the idea. If that wasn't bad enough, there's also the assassins of a legendary death cult and an up-and-coming megalomaniac (as brilliant as he is bodiless) who have marked Emperor for their own nefarious purposes.

But Mollusk isn't about to let the Earth slip out of his own tentacles and into the less capable clutches of another. So it's time to dust off the old death ray and come out of retirement. Except this time, he's not out to rule the world. He's out to save it from the peril of the Sinister Brain!

    "Toying with the Tropes"

This author has toyed with all the tropes of SciFi and come up with something somewhere between 1950's alien conquest literature and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It makes for a fun romp that all can enjoy.

    "Surprisingly good"

Amusing light story. Mollusk reminds me of a Neptunian Sheldon Cooper. Fabulous narration and satisfying conclusion. I'm off to find more of both the author and narrator.

    "Great story, AWESOME narrator!"

This was a very comedic story, but the nest part was the narrator--he really made the characters come alive, far better than any other I've listened to. I highly recommend this audible book.

    "Excellent sci-fi comedy"

I got this thinking it was just a sci-fi novel and was pleasantly surprised to find it was a very funny comedy also. Which turn out to be exactly what I was looking for in a book. A good story, lots of fun, action, and laughs.

The, the words, the phrases, the narration. It's all Pitch Perfect! Emperor mollusk is the ruler of Terra. he's been a bit of a bad boy, but as he says, "I am very very smart".

    "So clever it became flat"

The story was as narcissistic as the main character, whose self-aggrandizing takes center stage. He's interesting, but the plot is repeatedly cut short to showcase his dramas. After a while they become similar and I ceased to care very much. This being said, the work is creative, with interesting life forms, and is refreshingly not sexist. I enjoyed it until I began to realize that it couldn't really go anywhere without any meaningful relationships. If you don't mind superficial and like to stay on the purely mental side you may enjoy the ride.

"Morality mores & time decay of brilliance"

I am a sucker for absurd sci fi with a sense of humor. And as this story features a cephalopod who may have suckers but refuses to be one himself, I really enjoyed it. It features a question of what must a villain do to prove he is not such a bad guy. Lord Mollusk is not interested in a morality he can't prove scientifically exists. He cares only for the experimental process & satisfying his professional curiosity of no longer being vindictively evil. Being a genius, he is gracious in his condescension because he is secure in his own superior intelligence. But when the Sinister Brain shows up & challenges his curiosity with a grand mystery, it is a battle of wills & wits to unravel what is really going on. Oh, and the universe is often in the brink of doomsday along the way due to the collateral damage caused by the conflict.

    "Silly Big Fun"
    Any additional comments?

Way over the top, but if you can let go and get into it, you will have a fun ride. Imagine a really campy sci-fi movie, or several of them stuck together back to back. I found it got a little repetitive, and the ending was guessed well ahead of time, but the entertaining imagination of the author drew me through those faults.

    "The Narrator Saves This Book"

The story itself is not horrible. You pretty much get what the cover says it is; an amusing story using every [sci-fi] pulp-fiction trope from the 1950s and 60s all mashed together. Not hilarious, but it is amusing. A full five stars from the narrator, though. His reading and ability to switch voices actually elevated the story from eye-rolls to entertaining. I will look for more by this narrator.

    "Didn't love it"

I've listened to a few of A.Lee Martinez's books before and loved the funny fantasy nature of them but this one didn't do it for me. I found it to be slow going and never really got into the story or characters. Just wasn't for me.

    "Effortlessly funny, couldn't stop listening!"

Although there were occasional flaws in the performance and story, the overall effect of this wonderful combination of author and narrator was something I had to finish in three big gulps. Genuinely laugh-out-loud funny in many places, stylish, creative, absurd and ridiculous in equal measures. I was honestly down in the dumps when I realised I'd finished it so quickly. With elements that reminded me of Adams and Rankin, this was a great find. I'm off to seek out more.

    "Very funny tall tale."

So, here we have a fantastic combination of Megamind and Dispicable Me.
It's a funny romp through the solar system with a lot of heart and great set pieces.
The characters are all the right side of silly, and the plot wraps up nicely.
Another good book from the author of Monster.

    "Great book, well read."

I took a chance on this based on the sample, not having read anything by Martinez before, and came away impressed. It's a very fun book, quite unusual, and with a great lead character.
