Publisher's Summary

The world is falling to the burning shadow of the Possessed and only the power of a battle mage can save it. But the ancient bond with dragonkind is failing. Of those that answer a summoning too many are black. Black dragons are the enemy of humankind. Black dragons are mad.

Falco Dante is a weakling in a world of warriors, but worse than this, he is the son of a madman. Driven by grief, Falco makes a decision that will drive him to the brink of despair. As he tries to come to terms with his actions Falco follows his friends to the Academy of War, an elite training school dedicated to martial excellence. But while his friends make progress he struggles to overcome his doubts and insecurity. Even Queen Catherine of Wrath has her doubts about Falco's training.

While the Queen tries to unite the Kingdoms against the Possessed, Falco struggles to overcome his fears. Will he unlock the power trapped inside him or will he succumb to madness and murder like his father?

Stop whatever you are reading and get this one!!!!

Could not drop this book, the action is just draw dropping, it is so well written and The Narration is off the charts, i just wander why lots of people have not checked this book out, and i have to say, i have read over 500 books and this is the first time, i have ever deemed to write a review, that has to tell you something.

Don’t do that.....

It really ticks me off when a great story which is narrated great has quality issues with the recording. DON’T do such a disservice to the author and narrator. Awesome book, awesome performance, recording people should be whipped.

Dirge

The story was fine. What made me write the review was the tempo of the narration. There was no energy. There was no speed up during fights. There was nothing but the long slow dirge.

amazing book!

I was skeptical about this book with such a mundane cliche title however upon reading/listening to it I can now say it rivals books like The Riftwar saga, Drizzt Dourden books, and even the Dragon Lance books from back in the day.

If you like fantasy and dragons then give this a try

Words lost...

This was a good book and that it was written as a complete story is even better. The only complaint I have was that end of words and sometimes whole words would just dropped.

The narrator would be reading then sudd.... part of a word would drop off completely. This was made worse when ..... words went ........ Fortunately there were only a few places that it was really noticeable.

Overal I recommend the book.

Volume needs to be adjusted!

the first quarter of this book is next to impossible to hear unless you are wearing noise suppressant headphones or have it playing through a much louder speaker system. I typically use my Bluetooth headset to listen to audiobooks. I was nearly unable to do so at the beginning of this book. Also at the end of the book, several times the narrator's voice would just drop off at the end of a sentence and you are left wondering what he was saying. It's a shame about the technical problems, but the story is amazing! it was well narrated and the characters are easily distinguishable. Aside from the aforementioned technical issues, the story was immensely enjoyable and I'm sure is an even better read.

Drags on

The fight scenes drag on and on. Reiterates the same point repeatedly. I kept saying “Ok! Get on with it already!” When the narrator needed to “yell” it sounded like he was gasping for air. The last 3 hours didnt come fast enough. I’m sorry I really am. I rarely give reviews like this. I do like the premise of a character overcoming his mental barriers to become a strong individual.

A captivating read from beginning to the end.

One of my favorite books of the year. An excellently written book with top notched narration. I was totally captivated to the end.

Struggled with audio a bit

Story was good, audio was not great in that the narrator's words cut off randomly all the time. I thought the narrator was pretty good (I know I couldn't do nearly as well). However, I couldn't really get over how every instance of a character speaking with more than an inside voice was portrayed with kind of a choking croak, or a garbled whisper. difficult to understand at times, and hard to take seriously (for me). Drove me nuts.

good story but issues in narration

enjoyed the story very much but the narrator mispronounced words intermittently and many sections we're repeated. Greater care needed in editing and quality control

Great story but rather bad performance.

Loved the story it captivated me and I finished the whole book in under three days.
The only draw back was narrator's performance,
He has a very pleasant voice but at times I had hard time keeping up with him.

Great book, well read mostly...

What did you like most about Battle Mage?

Great value for money, classic sword & sorcery

What was one of the most memorable moments of Battle Mage?

Falco summoning his dragon

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

yes

Any additional comments?

The later chapters are a bit jumpy, some words are mis-read and have obviously not been "proof" listened to. These are a bit jarring and take you out of the story a bit

really liked the story

Loved the story, had some thrilling moments and lots of, lump in the back of the throat honor moments, that keeps me enjoying fantasy as a genre. Off now to find any more titles by Flannery

Brilliant book very minor issue with performance

Before I explain don’t let this point out you off. This is an amazing fantasy book and it is a very minor point. When the book describes a moment where a character is shouting the narrator can’t ever seem to get the pitch right. Instead of a battle cry it would sound like a crackling death rattle. This would take me out of the moment was quite off putting.

This was my only bad point to an otherwise amazing story.

Fantastic

I have not listened to a book this good in a long time. It seemed like an entire series in one book that cut all of the filler without losing the character depth and world building. Had me from start to finish.

The narrator also did a grate job though i had to turn the bass off or it got distorted in places.

Wonderful story let down buy terrible editing

A true epic fantasy. Unfortunately some sentences have been clipped so you only hear half of the last word. Regardless, I really enjoyed the plot and I’m hoping we see more of Falco Dante.

Could not stop listening

What made the experience of listening to Battle Mage the most enjoyable?

The book covers the entire hero's journey. This is a stand alone, 35 hour epic!

Who was your favorite character and why?

It has to be Falco Dante, the protagonist. Listening to his story from weakling/reject to mythical hero.

What does RD Watson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrator's voice is very easy to listen to. He draws you in.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I tried. I had to sleep in between. Towards the end my wife was getting annoyed about how much I was listening to the book.

Any additional comments?

The only downside is there about 3 sections of the book where the audio editing phases out the narrators voice at the end of a sentence. Fortunately, these phase were brief. And even with them I still rate this book very highly.

Narrator cuts some words off

Unique world, almost seems like medieval earth alternative history. The narrator does a good job of it but he sometimes calls the same character by a different version of their name, and I’m not sure if it’s the narrator doing it but he occasionally leaves off the last word to a sentence. And then there’s all the grammar errors and the average job the editors did missing random words that needed to be removed. Yet despite all that I’m am really enjoying the book so far!
