Publisher's summary

In this spellbinding new Regency series by Christi Caldwell, The Heart of a Duke meets the Brethren of the Lords. The stakes are high and passions flare hot in Regency England!

A widow with a past...The last thing Victoria Barrett, the Viscountess Waters, has any interest in is romance. When the only man she's ever loved was killed, she endured an arranged marriage to a cruel man in order to survive. Now widowed, her only focus is on clearing her son's name from the charge of murder. That is until the love of her life returns from the grave.

A leader of a once great agency...Nathaniel Archer, the Earl of Exeter head of the Crown's elite organization, The Brethren, is back on British soil. Captured and tortured 20 years ago, he clung to memories of his first love until he could escape. Discovering she has married whilst he was captive, Nathaniel sets aside the distractions of love...until an unexpected case is thrust upon him - to solve the murder of the Viscount Waters. There is just one complication: the prime suspect's mother is none other than Victoria, the woman he once loved with his very soul.

Secrets will be uncovered and passions rekindled. Victoria and Nathaniel must trust one another if they hope to start anew - in love and life. But will duty destroy their last chance?

Okay story and good narration.

This was an 8 hour long audible book that seemed like it was 15 hours. The miscommunication between these two seemed to drag out forever. The internal dialogue was becoming annoying. Just freaking talk to each other already! It really seems like Christy Calwell books are all like that. Full of internal dialogue.

The story line and plot was decent. I liked that the ages of the main characters Victoria and Malcolm were older, she was 43 he was 45. I don't know if I would like all HR romance to be with older couples because I like the HEA ending with having babies with younger couples. I liked the murder mystery portion. It did get better when they finally told each other the truth and got it together. I like spy books, and this one could have been better, IMO.

As for the narration Time Campbell does a good job narrating just about ALL CC's books. He does really well making the women sound like women. A total plus there. He has a nice reading voice and the men sound sexy.

Beautiful Story

Christi Caldwell has written one of the most emotional and well characterized stories in her career as an author. The second chance story of a middle aged couple uses previously written stories to advantage in creating the story line but it reads well on its own. Tim Campbell narration is spot on as usual breathing life into the world Christi has pulled us into with her charming words.

Lovely story, fast pace, entertaining characters

I really enjoyed this book which is a great beginning for this series. CC did a great job in creating an exciting love story with interesting characters with lots of spunk.

meh..

Tim Campbell is always a 5 star!

In this case he gets full credit for my finishing this book.

story fell way short for me. not enough depth or development, it all felt very superficial so we're left to just "know" there was some history between H & h. nothing much to go on and connect to characters. I also found it frustrating to constantly hear about their, or more so HER aging/age and how her body had changed. it was annoying.not sure if I'll move onto the next.

Loved the story and the narration.

His work with the Brethren came between their love and their future until her husband was murdered and suspicion came to her doorstep. Victoria was a strong woman who did what she needed to. I enjoyed the unconditional love for her children and complete belief in her son. Nathaniel survived a terrible fate but lost Victoria. He was so driven to seek out the truth of her husband's death even through his hurt. I loved his willingness to look beyond the obvious to help Victoria. I cheered as things looked up for them. The narration by Tim Campbell held my interest while I traveled to and from work. I love listening to him.

This is my unsolicited review.

Narrators voice

I couldn’t even get through the first chapter due to the narrator’s voice. It was gravel and sounded like a the world’s most boring professor droning on about some tedious subject. Ugh!

Repetition at nauseum

This book repeated itself over and over. You could have put the whole story line in 3 chapters.
