Publisher's Summary

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    Story
"Does the Narrator suck or is it just the material?"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Either a better story or a better narrator. I'm not sure which. Is the writing really as bad as I'm hearing or is it bad narration? The story telling is horrific. I'd forgotten how much I dislike female writers. There's just so much needless detraction from the story (what ever that might be) and I'm only an hour and a half into the audio and there's no indication that it's going to get any better. The writer isn't an author yet. It's painfully obvious that they rely too heavily on their thesaurus. The dialog is amateurishly cobbled together and every sentence paints the image of someone struggling to write a book, instead of someone telling a story.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephenie Meyer again?

Nope. Never heard of this writer before. I was dared by my daughter (the bookworm) to make it past chapter 7 as nobody in her book club had been able to. I can hear why; the writing is absolute crap. I can't imagine reading this. I think it would make my eyes bleed. WooHoo! I'm up to chapter 6. I don't care about any of the characters so far. I do hate the heroin though (can't remember her name. I care that much about her). Too much useless back story has been heaped upon me about her that I'm not ready to hear and don't give a damn about, and the story isn't moving forward. This writer reminds me of George Martin. 50,000 words to say what would be better said in 100. The upside is they only used 2 uninteresting characters to do it, whereas Martin would have used 30.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate Reading?

Jeremy Irons, Jim Dale, Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, or Harlan Ellison.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Host?

All of it. The premiss supports a potentially great story, but this writer is NOT a story teller.
Any additional comments?

    I can't believe I paid for this.

    "Fantastic!"
What made the experience of listening to The Host the most enjoyable?

The narration was perfect, the story was engrossing, thoughtful, touching, funny.. extremely well written.. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a little hesitant, due to the poor reviews over the writing of the vampire books, but this was exceptional.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I truely enjoyed the Uncle, and his gruf character. I felt compassion for Doc, who was obviously troubled by some of the things he had to do.

    Which scene was your favorite?

no one favorite. I did, however, think the ending was specacular. When you're way into a good book like this, you think.. how on earth are they going to end this properly... I get nervous and sometimes don't want to finish for fear of disappointment. I was not disappointed!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Jody was unable to be revived and the soul was put back into her.. it was such a minor part of the book, but so sweet.

    Any additional comments?

After reading the book, I will avoid the movie like a plague. There is no way it can enhance anything.

"Much Much better than the twilight books"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Totally...while the books starts out slow it is one of the best books I have heard in a long time. My husband and I both have listened to it multiple times.

What did you like best about this story?

The heart of it it amazing

What about Kate Reading’s performance did you like?

the feeling that you can feel developing throughout the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Ahhh...to do that would include spoilers, but I will say it brought me to tears and left me feeling better for having read it.

    Any additional comments?

While the Twilight books are very good and enjoyable... the Host is by far her best work. While it takes a while for it to pick up, once you get into the book you realize how necessary the beginning was. I LOVE THIS BOOK each time I read it.

    Story
    "Fantastic!!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book had it all. It was a sci-fi/drama/romance/thriller. Read it because I enjoyed the Twilight series but was afraid it would be to teen-drama. Not even close. Yes it had a love story, but as a guy, it wasn't overkill for me. Just a good book. No...great book.

What other book might you compare The Host to and why?

Though, it was nothing like the Hunger Games series. It left me with that feeling that it was close. Probably because of the other-worldly story mixed with a love story and action, all rolled into one.

Which character – as performed by Kate Reading – was your favorite?

Wanda/Melanie and Jeb. Kate Reading was awesome

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both. More the first, but a little bit on the latter. I'm a guy!

    Any additional comments?

Read it! You won't be disappointed.

"Surprised that I really liked it."
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Host?

The internal Dialog between Melody and Wanda keeps you waiting to see what is next.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There were so many scenes that I Love it is hard to pick just one. The book started kind of slow but after the first chapter I could not put it down. I keep turning off the music at work and playing the book, so I could see what happen next. If I fell asleep when I woke up I rewound to see what I missed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was shocked by the ending but enjoyed it.

    Any additional comments?

I like the way the charters came to life. If you enjoy a book where you can see and feel like you are a part of it then you will love this book. When I found a book that keep me off FB I was shocked and surprised.

What did you like best about The Host? What did you like least?

Narrator is MUCH too old to voice the main chararcter(s) and it is very distracting from the story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    Yes!
