Publisher's summary

Shadow Ochoa is lying low in the Kansas Territory, waiting for his fellow Texas Rangers—the Hell's Eight brotherhood—to clear his name. That is, until he's unjustly strung up for horse thieving... and pretty Fei Yen intervenes. Invoking a seldomused law, the exotic lady prospector claims Shadow as her husband and rides off with the bridegroom shackled to her buckboard.

Savvy, fearless Fei is singlemindedly devoted to her hidden claim and all it promises: wealth, security and freedom. A husband is just a necessary inconvenience and a name on paper to hold the claim she cannot.

Shadow isn't a man to take orders from anyone, especially from lovely Fei—except the friction between them ignites into nightly blazes of allconsuming passion. Soon Shadow is dreaming a little himself: of the life they could have if Fei could see past the lure of independence. If bounty hunters weren't closing in on him. If he's left standing when the impending showdown has ended....

The thrill has gone away...sorta

Well, nothing good lasts forever. This Hell's 8 story just didn't do it for me like the other previous 4 Hell's 8 stories. It wasn't as sensual and erotic. It didn't make as much sense or have as much depth. I never got how Shadow and Fei Yen fell in love. It was too fast and never explained. Even the attraction--at least to the degree required to want to stay married-- seemed unexplainable. And Shadow's desire to be committed to someone all-of-a-sudden just didn't make sense. Why Fei Yen? Why now? And if I don't hear "son-of-a-b****" again, ever, it'll be too soon! I don't have a problem with the phrase, just the monumental number of times Shadow says it one story. I was disappointed, but McCarty has given me much to enjoy over the previous 4. So she's allowed to not be 100% all of the time. No one is. I also haven't taken to her new Shadow Wrangler series. So I don't think it's me. I think something is changing in her writing, and the shift is making me wonder if I'll continue to be so excited and so quick to jump for her next release. Time will tell.

I adore this series

Any additional comments?

I listed to audiobooks when I run and the books in this series always make me want to run longer so that I can hear more. Happily

So, So

The Story line was not as good as the previous books. It seems that the author is not as invested in the series as she was before. I am not sure if I will continue with the series.

Love Me Some Hell's Eight

I love hells eight and was anxiously awaiting the next story in this series. Shadow's story was sweet and touching. I wish she would have gave us a better understanding of how Shadow escaped the shackles and handcuffs of the US Army but it's ok the story was still great. If you have not heard the other stories do yourself a favor and listen to them starting with Caines story.
The narrator to me did not do Shadow or Fei ANY justice. I like this narrator in other books but she was not good with this story. I really wish that they would have used any of the narrators from the previous stories, I would had even accepted the one from Sams Creed.

Please use one of the other narrators for the next book.

Great Series need one narrator

I have listened to the four books of this series twice. It is a great series and I'm looking forward to the next ones. My only suggestion that would make it better is if Savannah Richards is the narrator for all. She is the best of those who did these four books and keeping the same narrator and therefore the same voices for the characters makes them more real.

Great Story

I loved this story, it had romance, communication issues (a crux for all romance books), action, a villain and redemption. I loved that Fei was a strong woman who struggled with finding her role in life and that Shadow was also a strong character with some major character flaws. I love a book that adds drama without making one of them too stupid to live. Again, one of my favorite books of this series. Hot and romantic without being over the top.

Trashy Romance with a twist

Where does Shadow's Stand rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I actually enjoyed this book. It's not the most intellectual I've ever read, but for a steamy romance book, it actually is pretty deep.

Sweet love story with a strong plot

The bare abs cover does this book a terrible injustice, it cheapens this sweet historical fiction. The meaningful plot and the characters make this book, not the sex scenes.

Pretty good continuation of series

I agree with most of the other reviewers' comments about the story line itself, so won't go into that aspect of the book.

The Narrator did a fairly decent job in general as there were several different characters all talking during a couple of the scenes. That said, shifting between voices was definitely a challenge for her. Many times I couldn't tell the difference between Tracker, Tucker, Sam and Shadow. Back at the beginning books of the series Tracker and Shadow both spoke in a deep, soft and sultry voices (which would be expected of brothers). Here, they just sound as normal as the others. Shadow's voice lacked any real depth of emotion especially when the scene was intimate between him and Fey. And he 'spoke' way too fast all the time.

I totally agree with another reviewer's comment about wishing the Narrators throughout the series had remained the same. I understand that these books were written over a long period of time, so perhaps the original Narrators were not available ... very sad as the story line lost something due to those changes over time.
