Publisher's Summary

Within the pages of very rare books, some centuries old, lie the secrets of the paranormal. Abby Radwell’s unusual psychic talent has made her an expert in such volumes - and sometimes taken her into dangerous territory. After a deadly incident in the private library of an obsessive collector, Abby receives a blackmail threat, and rumors swirl that an old alchemical text known as The Key has reappeared on the black market. A number of ruthless people are searching for the book. Some believe that Abby can find it for them.

Abby wants no part of it. But the pressure mounts after a rare-book dealer dies mysteriously. Convinced that she needs an investigator who can also play bodyguard, Abby hires Sam Coppersmith, an expert in paranormal crystals and amber - “hot rocks.” Passion flares immediately between them, yet neither entirely trusts the other. Both are concealing secrets. Both have their own agendas. Sam concludes that the only way to keep Abby safe is to take her to property owned by his rich and reclusive family - a compound in the small town of Copper Beach, on a private island. But small towns are no safer than large cities when it comes to dealing with a killer who has paranormal talents, and a blackmailer who will stop at nothing to obtain an ancient alchemical code....

"Her usual good storytelling well told"

JAK is a great storyteller, and this is one of her usual good stories. While there is no definite Arcane Society mention, the paranormal is pretty much that same idea, though crystal talents seem to have much more prestige. She is also dealing with the issue of a talented child in an untalented family and the problem of appearing "normal" in order to get on with her life instead of being locked up as crazy.

A talented young woman with a gift for unlocking psy-locked books, is approached by multiple parties with blackmail or bribes to find and unlock a certain lab book which contains dangerous information regarding certain powerful crystals. A friend refers her to a member of the family, the Coppersmiths, which first found the crystals and is also looking for the notebook, to keep this information out of hands which would misuse these crystals. Her stepbrother is also asking her for help with the notebook, as her family has been pressured by loss of their trust fund to pressure her.

Murder and mayhem ensue in search of this notebook, but as there are hints of other mysteries in the family, including the sudden upsurge of talent in the Coppersmith family and two more unwedded members of the family to match up. I suspect at least a trilogy for this set of extended characters.

What would have made Copper Beach better?

Author failed to establish believable basis for the subject matter.

Has Copper Beach turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

What didn’t you like about Tanya Eby’s performance?

Fine. She can't be blamed for the thin plot.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Copper Beach?

If I cut, I'm not sure even a short story would remain.

I loved this book. Like all of the arcane society and harmony books, this book was great.
I've added Jayne Krentz to my list of favorite authors. She has not let me down. If you have not read any of her books I'd highly reccomend these books.
