Story
Rusty Moss has raised his niece Mia since she was a baby. Now that she's almost 18, he's worried that the life he's given her - living off the grid in a cabin deep in the woods - is holding her back from her full potential. But that angst gets pushed aside when the undead forest animals arrive. At first it's just a squirrel - shockingly violent and almost impossible to kill. Followed by a grizzly bear, also aggressive and resilient, even when point-blank shotgun blasts to the face are involved.

On December 21, 2012, according to the Mayan Calendar, the world was supposed to end. It didn't. But on that day, 113 mysterious manuscripts were discovered around the world, each one written in blood by an unknown author. After several dozen unexplained deaths befell the finders of said manuscripts, a decision was made to lock them up for good in a secret vault beneath the Vatican. It is said that anyone who reads the stories will die, and as such they are now referred to as "The Cursed Manuscripts."

Publisher's summary
The last thing Kaylee wants to do is participate in a childish scavenger hunt - especially inside the abandoned retirement home on the edge of town. When she finds a bruised, deaf boy hiding inside one of the rooms, she vows to lead him to safety - only to discover the front doors are now padlocked, and her friends are nowhere to be found. Kaylee is about to learn that not everything that goes "bump in the night" is imaginary, and sometimes there are worse things to fear than ghosts.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.
This audio book was a bit of a struggle for me to finish. It started out okay but I quickly found it to be a little imature. I would say it's more appropriate for younger people, maybe teens.

'Mean Girls' in abandon building
Any additional comments?
Resthaven
Written by: Erik Therme
Narrated by: Randi Larson
This is an audible book that I requested and the review is voluntary.
This was a good book and not what I expected. I thought is was going to be a ghost book but it is not. It was just as scary. Mean girls! Ahhh! LOL. Girls go to a abandon building, mean girls mostly, and one leaves locking the others in. There happened to be others in the building. One is not happy the girls are there. It is a good mystery, suspense, and an emotional story. I enjoyed it. The narration added to the story by making the scenes more dramatic. All the voices were perfect for the characters. Well done!

Stay away from abandoned buildings. You never know what will happen. Kaylee and her friends are about to find this out the hard way.
This was a good story full of suspense, mystery, twists and surprises. It took a chapter or two to really get going but once it did it pulled me in completely and never let go. Before I new it 5 1/2 hours had flown by and it was over.
Good cast of characters both likable and unlikable. The new girl, the snotty bratty girl, the whiny girl, the sweet girl etc. and most of them will get on your nerves at one point or another. Kaylee of coarse was a great character. Strong, independent and not afraid to stand up for herself.
Randi Larson's narration was great. Pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. Her voice fit the characters perfectly and sounded age appropriate. It throws a whole story of when the narrator doesn't sound like a teen. Really good character voices. She brought the characters, their personalities and the story to life. Very enjoyable.

Not what i expected
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The whiney of the every single character. It got to the point very early on that i just wanted to shut the book off and listen to something else
What could Erik Therme have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Less whiney of characterd for one. I did expect a more scary book then what this was. The twist with the boy was interesting, but that's as far as i would go. It feels unfinished.
What about Randi Larson’s performance did you like?
I did like her inflections and i never had trouble understanding if it was a guy or a girl talking.
Could you see Resthaven being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No.

Good stuff!
Any additional comments?
Erik Therme's writing style is fluid and deft. This skill is put on display in Resthaven, a YA suspense book that takes the reader into the chilling, creepy interior of an abandoned retirement home...with no way to escape.
A tagline for the book is "sometimes there are worse things to fear than ghosts." One of those fears should be missing out on Therme's writing. My two kids aren't of reading age, but as soon as they are up to it, they're getting this book shoved into their hot little hands.
The audio does justice to the book and helps to bring it alive!

For a teen thriller, not too bad
I hadn't previously noticed the genre until I had already started listening to this story. While I don't usually lean towards YA stories, I decided to keep going with this one.
Right off the bat I'm confused by the storyline a bit. It seems odd that Kaylee would venture off to a sleepover at a girl's house she doesn't even know. I get that the mutual friend Anna, invited her to Jamie's house but that's still a weird detail. The mix of girls is so bizarre too. Which I guess is part of the point. No one set of girls seems especially paired well to align together for the duration of the story.
I felt like the Jamie and Anna characters were especially whiney and obnoxious sounding. I tried to think back and recall my own daughter (or myself for that matter) and I never really could relate or find any common ground to this degree of whiney girl. The narrator did well in that regard - being a convincingly whiney sounding young woman.
The story itself was fast paced and had some surprises so that was good. The boy was an interesting element to the story as was the old man. It wasn't hard to imagine the fear being locked in an old folks hospital. I was a little confused as to how much time had elapsed with regard to the man and boy and the girls being in there.
I really had a hard time finding any of the characters relatable and Jamie was especially horrible. I liked the brother detail however. I felt like there were some loose ends with regards to Jamie's family and the whispering that Kaylee overheard. The end kind of lets you draw your own conclusions but the direction it eludes to seems a little improbable.
