Publisher's summary

Shiva, 'the destroyer' among the Hindu trinity (of gods), is depicted in many contradictory manners. He is an ascetic who wears animal skin, his body smeared with ashes. Contradictory to his wild nature, he is also depicted as having a family, with a beautiful wife and two children. There are many more such varied representations of Shiva, the most prominent of these being the Linga and the Nataraja. The author, Devdutt Pattanaik, introduces listeners to these varied aspects and representations, and then sets about interpreting them. He explains the different anomalies and conflicts in beliefs, as well as the symbolism, rituals and reasons behind Hindu worship.

Pattanaik outlines the Vedic tradition reflected in the god Shiva. A mixture of myth telling, deep insights and response to Western interpretation this text provides an excellent introduction to the life changing grace of Lord Shiva.

Fantastic and thorough introduction to Shiva

A most straightforward explanation of Shaivism as a practical means to liberation. Provides historical, spiritual, mythical, and physical context to inform the whole of Shiva’s dance, and how we can rejoice and join in the dance.

A revolutionary look at Hinduism and Shiva

Phenomenal Book, Here is a little background about me, I was raised Hindu yet always had my doubts specially from being made to do it but reading this has given me a new lease on it, this book has redefined Hinduism for a Hindu all too bored of being forced.

No Secret

Had hoped to learn some unknown secrets about Shiva but ended up listening to some stories behind Shiva's names. Not worth buying for sure
