Publisher's summary

Defeat the monsters, become the champion, save the survivors.

A sliver of humanity abandons Earth, forced into the skies because genetically enhanced monsters rule the world. Four hundred years later, the Salvation Fleet returns, desperate to unload their overcrowded decks. Darcy - the AI mastermind who controls the fleet - uses simulated competitions called the Reincarnation Trials to determine who becomes a council member and who earns the right to join the first colony.

Theo achieves Citizen status after a decade of arduous training and is thrust into the Reincarnation Trials. Ready to help humanity survive, he enters the Snagglewood competition. The theme is a western, where he defends humanity against the monsters invading its shores. While he strives for first on the leader boards, the real world calls for his help.

After being gone for so long, Earth transitions into a very dangerous place filled with narocks who call the overgrown jungles and forests home. Hidden among the terrors, pockets of humanity cower under the surface, most of them in urgent need of rescue.

A Science Fiction Thriller I didn't know I needed

This book is equal parts "space fairing people surviving in a galaxy that is hostile to them," "people are the real monsters," and "wild west inspired game world where players compete to see who will become the leader." It's several great tastes that taste great together. An exceptional blend of politics, intrigue, world building, survival, and of course statistical goodness.

Good storyline

Avatar+ Hunger Games +West World + Land of the Lost.

Took a little of each and baked a cake. Action, adventure, mystery and a sprinkling of romance.

Really enjoyed rather storyline. The narrator could of had a little better voice fluctuation…. But different voices spot on. Different from anything I’ve listened to. Usually prefer apocalyptic…. This was great take on how humanity would survive and evolve

Well worth the credit

Problematic

This book has several issues that could turn a person off from this.

The first is the performance. While Rebecca Woods was great, I found Daniel Wisniewski's style pulled me out of the story. When narrating the parts within the ship, everything is perfect. While in the western part of the story he reads things with too much of a performance. Everything feels like he's offering up words of wisdom while staring off into the middle distance, and he might suddenly say 'I'm Batman' at any moment. While it pulled me out of the story, it wasn't intolerable by any means.

The second is the author's fixation on a 'the women need to breed' mentality. I get it, lots of births are necessary to kick start things, but with a few minute think I can come up with a better idea than rape the women and force them to have six kids each. Considering the AI had over 400 years to think up an alternative, clearly this is a theme that he wants to be there. I've read books with worse themes, but I knew it going in. This kinda hits you in the face given it's a litrpg and there aren't any warnings in the publisher summary.

With the above two issues combined, I wasn't engrossed in the story and picked up on several little things that didn't make sense. Like, terminal velocity is about 120mph, and is reached within 12 seconds. Sudden stops wouldn't leave anyone completely uninjured. The LitRPG aspect was barely there too. I want stat changes and power progression, not 'his score went up again' as the only change.

I didn't absolutely hate this book, but I'm not going to be continuing the series.

Audio issues at start, ok story, abrupt ending

The first 30 or so minutes were badly mixed. The character voices were much louder than the rest of the narration.

Interesting story, but I got bored for the last few hours. It made it hard to finish.

The end seemed kind of rushed. Like the author didn’t know how to finish it, or was up against a deadline. The end was also another example of you have to buy book two to really find out how book one ends.

I probably won’t pick up book two.

Wow What an Amazing Story

this book has easily moved to the top 10 of my book list. I feel like i end up saying this a lot but i can't wait for the next book to come out. The Story was great had me invested in listening to each little detail even had to rewind a few times to make sure I didn't miss something. Characters were relatable and got me to have a vested interest in their wellbeing.

delightful!

Great story and narration!

Humanity has been driven to the stars by their own biological creations of war. Ruled by an A.I. they compete in virtual reality for privilege, power, and resources. But now they are returning to the planet that birthed them, and everything might just change...

Rebecca and Daniel did a wonderful job with the narration!

I really enjoyed this story, and can't wait to find out what happens next!

Worth a listen...

it's a solid book. characters are okay. the AI Darcy is interesting as a hero/villain. I don't know why this is classified under the lit RPG category. would have been much cooler if it was.

Not much LitRPG, but a great story nonetheless...

Story has a lot of political intrigue and focuses how the biggest threat to humanity during a monster Apocalypse are still the humans, with a MC trying his best despite the fact. The narration was perfect, creating a lot of moments that had me at the edge of my seat. My main gripe about this novel was that there was WAY too much internal monologuing from MC. There were several times when he came off as condescending or he just spoke so much to himself that it became irritating. The overall story was good enough that it was worth continuing, but if book 2 keeps the same format, it will be my last book.

The story

So I like the overall concept but here’s what’s lacking we didn’t go over all the species used in by the different governments snd the back grounds of all the counsel members and cutting short the trials is something I wasn’t a fan of. Here’s what I did like the voice acting was excellent and I loved Darcy playing the never losing kinda evil mastermind is was very cool. I liked the concept snd the ability to diverse what happens in the reincarnation. Some things I would have liked would be for the main character to have more faults and to get into some mischief and to maybe not keep the story so pg-13. I liked the book and I would give a second iteration a chance as well
