Publisher's Summary

For thirteen hundred years, Tibetans have been practicing shamtha/vipashyana (peaceful dwelling/insight): a profound form of meditation that illuminates and purifies the obstacles to spiritual realization. Tibetan Buddhists today regard shamatha/vipashyana as both the fundamental and the most advanced spiritual practice of all. On Pure Meditation, Pema Chödrön - the beloved American-born nun known for her bestselling book When Things Fall Apart - takes you step by step through this timeless and elegant meditative form. You will learn the posture that helps you relax your mind, how to use your own breath as a reminder to return to the present moment, and what to do with the many thoughts and emotions that arise during your meditation sessions. A straightforward, authoritative resource for students at all levels, Pure Meditation is a definitive guide to the authentic Tibetan Buddhist meditation that has brought its practitioners relaxation, peace of mind, and deeper awareness for hundreds of years.

Good Content, Poor Audio Quality

I found this book very helpful. I had issues with the recording though. It is from a live seminar and there is a boxy quality to her voice. Also lots of ambient room noises from the attendees. I found these things to be very distracting

Disappointing sound quality!

I read the 2 previous reviews and didn't think sound quality would be an issue. However, once purchased, I'm very disappointed by the quality of the recording. The MP3 is encoded at 32 KBPS which is extremely low quality. It makes me feel like I've got earplugs in.

Have only listened to 10 minutes of this audiobook so far but I'm not sure I can listen to much more!

A Spiritual Staple

I love this teaching. It has been in my digital library for 2 years now and I go back to it whenever I have a stressful life change. It's like an old friend.

I like it

Would you consider the audio edition of Pure Meditation to be better than the print version?

Im sure their about the same

What other book might you compare Pure Meditation to and why?

Brene Browns seminar: The Power of vulnerablity. Equaly good humor.

Have you listened to any of Pema Chodron’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Buy this book if you are interested in meditation. Pema Chodrons walks you throught some of the things that Im sure many beginners (and perhaps experienced as well) has wondered about. There are several good points in the audiobook. I wont reveal them here. They should be enjoy together with Pema Chodrons.

Any additional comments?

The start was a bit borrowing to me. So dont get disencouraged.

Good life practice

First let me tell you what this is not - it is not a guided meditation. At first I was disappointed: 'This is not telling me how to meditate', I thought. As I progressed, however, I realized that I was waiting for a guided meditation, which never comes, and that actually this recording was far more useful than that. It DOES give advice on sitting meditation - on letting thoughts go - but mainly it is about a whole life approach, about meditating with eyes open, about developing a flexible, loving outlook. If you haven't meditated before, I think you should start somewhere else, either at a meditation class or using a guided meditation tape or DVD. Once you have got some understanding of meditation and perhaps also of Buddhism, THEN you should listen to this recording, which contains some excellent information and advice. I avoid the word 'instruction' deliberately here, as this is not what Pema Chodron is about.
