Level headed approach to determining best players

As a sometimes watcher, but not avid follower, of the EPL I found this book really interesting. And I know of 8/10 players in the list already.

So let's get this out of the way. The list of best players are:

Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane, Stephen Gerard, Christiano Rinaldo, Denis Bercamp, Theiry Henry, Frank Lampard, Eric Cantona, Alan Shearer, Ryna Giggs.

Ian Slatter has put together the list in a very methodical way, giving scores out of ten for four categories (titles, goals, influence, and flair). The use of goals gives a distinct advantage to strikers and forwards, but otherwise it is a good system of scoring. Each player in the EPL is given a score out of 40, and here we have the top 10.

Slatter then goes through details of each player, giving their career history and highlights. Important games, goals, events etc and given time and context, to help understand why they are important.

Overall, a great way to give an overview and brief history of both the EPL and some important players. Very entertaining.

Narration by Simon Watts is good. He is quicker in narration than most, but is easy to follow and clear. His voice would actually work well as a commentator on the football, and suits the book well.

Perfect World Cup Supplement

I’ve come to the realization that people write “list” books just to spur comments like “you left off” and “he clearly shouldn’t be number six when he should be number seven” and “Premier League Legends: The 10 Greatest Premier League Players of All Time” is no exception. Anyone familiar with the league, its history and its players will undoubtedly have their own opinions – not unlike author Ian Slatter – but that’s what makes for interesting listening.

I won’t spoil anything by naming names other than to say that there are no current players on the list and, to me, one notable player not on the list. But, hey, isn’t that what I said at the start?
