Story
Without so much as a warning, humanity in its entirety was suddenly moved to another dimension. Every person, without exception. But this new world, with all its opportunities and gifts of wondrous abilities, was a stadium. A deadly arena of an unimaginable scale. And humanity was to be its latest gladiators. Every man, woman, and child was given a weapon and ordered to fight. Stuck in this dimension without a way out, only two options existed for the would-be hunters: Fight with monsters to complete the many trials ahead, or perish.

Publisher's Summary
A former assassin. An unspeakable past. The powerful people who want him dead.
Retiring peacefully in Genshin Valley was never an option for Danzen Ravja, regardless of his intentions. To prevent any more attacks on the defenseless valley he now calls home, Danzen and his yokai companions head west to address the Diyu Brotherhood head-on, to face down two honorable assassins and even more with no honor at all.
Danzen plans to bend his echo upon his return, to cultivate his inner strength through the power of a fallen heaven. He holds a desperate faith that it will give him control over his demons and bring him closer to wholeness. But the extremes he must take to accomplish these tasks may end up killing him, and that’s before his demon half-brother comes for him.
Danzen is no stranger to life or death struggles, no shrinking violet to wilt under the pressure of risking his hide to do what must be done. But with other people's lives on the line - people he cares about and who care about him in return - Danzen must use his talents of dealing death to save their lives.
Pilgrim is a xianxia cultivation series inspired by the Witcher books, John Wick films, the Inuyasha anime, the Preacher comics, and the movie Yojimbo.

Not what I expected after the first book
I was looking forward to book 2 of Pilgrim, but I am seriously disappointed.
Rarely I ever stop a book (this is the 3rd in my Audible library of 400+ titles), but I had to give up after *** SPOILER *** he essentially loses his 3rd fight on a row. This is just sloppy story telling: the all powerful badass going prepared to fight known enemies has to be bailed out one way or another. He has no rights to be the hero here. Narrowly winning once is fine. Getting beat again - by someone supposedly less powerful - with zero chances of winning without help AND not learning anything from it is not a story I am interested in reading further.
Shame because there is so much potential in this series.

Awesome story!
Love the characters and the narration, the inclusion of Yōkai and other super natural eastern type monsters that speak and fit well into the story line, you don’t see in to many of the cultivation novels that are coming out recently. Highly recommend and enjoy the ride, it’s dark at times but lots of humor as well! Looking forward to book 3

Non stop listening
Another successful story as we are drawn into even more of the unusual worlds that Danzen now lives in. With the unsual life that lives in the nearby area always allowing for the weird and wonderful and an ever present threat for his former Diyu Brotherhood then this audio takes us great places.
Action and a clouded future help as we explore the everyday happenings keeping a steady progression and interest.
I've been a fan of Naramore for a while and this narrative suits him well and will continue to follow further work in this series.
