Story
The Containment Zone is a 500-mile radius surrounded by mountains and closed in by gates. No one can leave, and anyone who tries will die. Within are lawless bandits, corrupt soldiers, and once-human greyskins that hunt down people to spread the virus. Some say the Containment Zone is where the greyskin virus originated. Others say the people inside are little more than lab rats being studied by the nefarious Screven government. When 12-year-old Skylar and her father, Liam, are caught trying to escape, they are taken to Vulture Hill, a government prison camp no one has ever left alive.

Curious where this is going
This is the third book I’ve read/listened to by this author - the first of this series. The other Starborn Sagas have piqued my interest, as has this saga. It is an uncomplicated, easy read/listen.
Mora has heard of Jeremiah and how he protects many settlements from the grey-skins. However, she learns Jeremiah’s protection comes at a high price and she learns a bit about what he’s hiding. On her solo trek to find him and ask for his aid, she discovers she has a special ability. Once in Screven she meets others with abilities. Together, they must protect everyone as they try to stop Jeremiah.
This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Em Eldridge ) and I would listen to another. Her wonderful voice acting brings life to the male and female characters and story in general. She is clear and concise so I could even speed it up to 2x without issues.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. This book ended without a resolution- bit of a cliffhanger.

Zombies, Superpowers and some romance
Out of Darkness The Starborn uprising Book one is an interesting mix of zombies and super powers in a post apocalyptic world. This world is filled with greyskins(zombies) and every town/city is either on there own or they have the protection of the City of Screven led by their leader Jeremiah. Screven provides protection but to acquire this protection you must give Screven 80 percent of your resources and follow all their rules. So it is a situation where the solution may be worse than the problem. The story follows Mora who is on a journey to get help for her town by striking a deal with Screven. On her journey she is cornered by a bunch of greyskins and it appears her time is up when suddenly she discovers she has a super power to move things with her mind which buys her time to nearly get away from the threat but it still seems she may be doomed when all of a sudden shots ring out and she is saved by the arrival of Connor. Connor helps her escape and takes her to his city of Salem which is protected by Salem.
From there more characters are introduced and Mora learns more about her powers and that there are other "Starborn' who also have powers. Jeremiah of Screven is very interested in the Starborn and Mora must decide if she will ally herself with him or with the other Starborn she meets.
There is also a bit of romance involved and somewhat of a love triangle. Some of the decisions by the characters seems a bit dumb and very impulsive but overall it is a pretty good story. The narration by Em Eldridge is quite good and seems to fit the character of Mora very well.
I have read Beyond the Gates by the same author which is a newer novel that takes place in the same world which I think I enjoyed slightly more but I am interested in reading the rest in the series and see how it all connects.

another great book
By no means am I great at reviews. I normally just listen and move on.. reccomend to friends when I come across a good one.. I started with the starborn ascension first (3 books in the series) I would highly reccomend starting there before this book. I am so glad I did. This was another great book from Jason D Morrow. It is not your typical zombie book. It follows a young girl (Mora) who discovers she has a very powerful gift. She is torn on what to do to help her colony survive. I am excited to get into the next book right away to see what happens next.

Excellent!
I always love the books by this author in his world. He has several series where we get to see different angles of the world. The mix of superpowers and zombies is one that continues to fascinate me. In this story, we see that each town has a difficult dilemma they must face—either defend themselves or enlist the protection of the Screven army at the price of 80 percent of their belongings. Mora is on a mission to enlist his list, but along the way, she realizes that there are others like her. People with superpowers who understand her drive and are desperate to stop Jeremiah’s reign.
Like other books by this author, characterization is done very well. Each person has their own personality, and it’s easy to understand why they come to the decisions that they do. Each of them seems to face their own dilemma and seeing the ways that they approach them is fascinating.
There is a bit of romance in the story, but it’s not overwhelming. Just enough to add a bit of a reprieve from the action of the main storyline.
Narration is excellent.

I was blown away!
As always, I have to state that this book was given to me for free in exchange for a review.
I always like to state that this does not impact my review or my opinion of the book. My reviews are honest and my own opinion of the story, performance, and overall thoughts on the book.
A well-crafted blend of post-apocalypse (zombies) and paranormal romance. There is something for everyone here, combat action, suspense, psychic powers, love triangles, and let’s not forget the zombies.
This thrilling action-filled novel is packed with everything you could want...from abilities to the hint at love to a revolution.
I definitely recommend this series and plan to buy his other novels quick, fast and in a hurry because I absolutely HAVE to know what happens next with and to the Starborn.
I feel like all these dystopian series with female leads run along with the same note & I'm really not into zombie books, so I was hesitant to get onto this books bandwagon. Let's face it, there's only so much you can do with zombies & Resident Evil pretty much covered it all. But this book was something else. It has a little something for everyone, action, adventure, horror, mystery, and romance. It delves into a whole new level of relationships & interactions between people. How everything you do not only affects you & the people in your life but everyone. What I liked the best was it was in no way predictable like I was expecting it to be.
Not too violent (for a zombie series) as befits a YA type offering but still plenty of zombie action. The supernatural aspect adds a welcome new dimension to the plot.

Zombies and superpowers!
This isn't another zombie story. Mora's attempting to save her village from the relentless greyskins when she begins noticing strange things about herself but she's unsure at first until she meets others like her. She has to learn to use the powers to take down the greyskins all the while, greyskins aren't the only problem. Not all humans are simply trying to survive, some have evil intentions.
The author builds a believable world filled with monsters or zombies that he calls greyskins. I liked that from the start. Mora is also a likable character, simply a young woman trying to survive and hold onto what's left of her family. The greyskins are everywhere and don't travel singularly but in hordes. The characters are real. I could picture the whole story playing out in my head. Their actions and thoughts mimic what one may really be thinking and doing.
The plot and action heighten throughout the story as more elements and twists are brought in. This was a really cool story and it was original.
I received this book free for an honest review.

Great Story - Did not want it to end
Wow! Jason Morrow has created an incredible storyline. Very exciting to listen to it all play out through the twists and turns. I hope I get to listen to the next parts.
Em Eldridge is the perfect voice for this book. She puts the proper emotion and voices to the characters. If there is any thing at all, it is that she pronounces the end of words ending with -ing as a hard G or K. For example "Spring Hill" sounds like "Spring Kill". It does not detract, just an observation.

Enjoyed!
I really wasn't expecting this one to be anything but bad... In the beginning, but surprisingly, the story actually picked up, and I ended up reading all of the series. Nice to have a new way of doing "zombie stories" not just the outbreak time, but significantly after. I think that one detail was my main attraction in this book specifically. Will see how the rest of the three will be.
