Joe Gunther, a longtime Vermont cop and now the head of the Vermont Bureau of Investigation, gets the call that every law-enforcement person hates: a cop has been shot and killed. A deputy sheriff was shot to death during a routine traffic stop on a dark country road.

From what can been seen on the cruiser's video recorder of the killers, it is believed that they were a couple of Boston-based drug runners who had been on their way from Canada down to Boston.

That's what brings Gunther and his team to the investigation: an attempt to shut down the major drug running operation, especially that of one Alan Budney. He's the disaffected son of a lobsterman, now a drug kingpin, who uses the closed, clannish lobster fishing community and his extended family in particular, to move drugs along the New England coast.

I got as far as chapter 5 and couldn’t take it anymore. The narration was fine but the voices were horrible especially Joe and Willie.

What happened to Tom Taylorson?

I really enjoyed hearing the narrator for all the prior books. But this new guy, who does have a nice pleasant voice when he is just telling the story, but every time he tries to voice Will, it just makes my skin crawl...

But the story is just as good as ever and I will continue with the next book in the series...

Not fond of the new narrator for this series

Good mystery. Joe quickly switched girlfriends and she was an immediate focus of content. I will have to get used to the new narrator. The old one already had given me a visual of Joe and his team. The new narrator has me changing my mind’s eye.

Was used to the last narrator

I love this author. I much prefer Tom Taylorson as narrator but this guy is not too bad. Some of his voices sounded the same though. There was a skip in the recording in the beginning of chapter 27 and I rewound twice with no improvement.

Awesome story-telling!

i was disappointed Tom Taylorsville was not narrating. this was like changing out all of the characters on your favorite TV show. I didn't like the voices for each character. probably my last book in the series.

Disappointment

First time reviewer. I read all the reviews and thought to myself ' as long as I go into it knowing it's not Tom narrating I can get through it, be positive'
Boy, was I positively wrong. I found myself laughing at the voices. Mr Mayor's book deserve better than my giggling everytime a new character is speaking. I couldn't even take the subject of the book serious. The voices are like a James Cagney 1940s 'copper' movie. It's sad but I'm going to skip the next 4 books.

I tried to get through it.

Another great mystery that comes at an important time as our country slides down into the swamp.

See review at book 32 - I enjoyed all of them

When listening to a Joe Gunther story you get used to a specific narrator and then you get to this book. I tried to be objective but I just didn't like his depictions of the characters. In fact, at times I had a hard time figuring out who was talking and at other times Joe Gunther's voice would change either pitch or accent.
Regarding the story, it was excellent but would have been superior with a different narrator.

Story was good but the narrator wasn't as good .

After reading 19 books and associating the voice of Tom Taylorson as Joe Gunther, it was difficult to into the character listening to Christopher Graybill. While I feel the Graybill is a great reader his voice is no Taylorson. Graybill tried too hard to swing his vocal tones down into the low baratones, way out of his range. Great story, but found it difficult to get engulfed into the character and story when I have been listening to the entire series.

Good story. Difficult adjustment to new narrator

I wasn't very fond of this narrator. It brought overall book enjoyment down. Hope the next narrator is better.
