Publisher's summary

From the critically acclaimed and New York Times best-selling author of When No One Is Watching comes a riveting thriller about the new caretaker of a historic estate who finds herself trapped on an island with a murderer—and the ghosts of her past.

Years after a breakdown and a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder derailed her historical preservationist career, Kenetria Nash and her alters have been given a second chance they can’t refuse: a position as resident caretaker of a historic home. Having been dormant for years, Ken has no idea what led them to this isolated Hudson River island, but she’s determined not to ruin their opportunity.

Then a surprise visit from the home’s conservation trust just as a Nor’easter bears down on the island disrupts her newfound life, leaving Ken trapped with a group of possibly dangerous strangers—including the man who brought her life tumbling down years earlier. When he turns up dead, Ken is the prime suspect.

Caught in a web of secrets and in a race against time, Ken and her alters must band together to prove their innocence and discover the truth of Kavanaugh Island—and their own past—or they risk losing not only their future, but their life.

Trauma

Learning about DID and other mental health issues. The drama was amazing and it seems like the dysfunctional reality most black people and lower income people experience in this world. So much hate, rage and racism and knowing this is how most white people feel is alarming

Great narration and read

Kenetria has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder and after being dormant for 6 years she wakes up to find one of her alters accepted a job at a castle on an isolated Hudson River Island. Not wanting to ruin anything she moves forward with the job but upon arrival to the island she quickly finds out the job isn’t what they were expecting.

I honestly had no idea what to expect from this book, I just knew I wanted to give a thriller a try but was low key scared at the same time because I hate thriller and horror movies especially with ghosts. But I then thought it won’t be that bad reading it. Well, I walked around jumpy for a few days and endured my husband making fun of me for it just to make it through this book, but it did not disappoint.

I listened to the audiobook while working and quickly determined this book needed my full attention because there was so much going on between Ken’s alters and the creepy remote castle on the island. When Celeste told Ken she needed to leave the island I found myself yelling at the book like I do any black person on a thriller movie…like get your black butt back on that boat sis. I would of swam off that Island if I had to. But anyway, I enjoyed how the story unfolded and could not seem to stop listening despite how scared I was the entire time.

I have been putting off reading When No One Is Watching but quickly went to request the audiobook when I finished this one because Alyssa Cole has me hooked now. If you are in the mood for something a little different, I highly recommend this book. You will have to allow yourself to get lost in this book because it can get a little confusing with all of Ken’s alters. I quickly got used to all the characters and found myself being entertained while on edge trying to wait for the story to unfold.

Scattered

Jumps around a lot I found it hard to follow. Needed to keep reminding. Maybe 🤔 ADHD but, focus was difficult

Very original plot

Loved the plot, the dialect and the voice actor so much. The very end was a bit lackluster but it kept me engaged the whole time. I hope she writes more thrillers!

Unique Concept

This book challenges notions of reality and safety on a whole new level! The narration expertly navigated a complex set of characters.

Hidden voices

I loved the story and how complex each personality was. The twisted history really stood out and i didn’t expect the connections at the end.

A lot.

While I loved this story and the author's intense descriptions, this one was difficult to follow. One to many characters in one. However, it did keep me coming back for more!

I’d listen again

Took a while to get to the plot. Was slightly unpredictable. Would suggest to others.
