Publisher's Summary

It’s amazing what bodily injury can do for a man. A fall from a racehorse left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. It was a bullet wound that helped him find one.

Although he’d been with a detective agency since his racing accident, it isn’t until some two-bit hoodlum drills a slug into his side that he is sent out on a case of his own. That is where he meets Zanna Martin, a woman who just might make life worth living again. But it is an even-money bet that he will be killed before she has the chance.

Fabulous!

Odds Against is the first of the Sid Halley books by Dick Francis and Geoffrey Howard is a wonderful narrator for Sid. This is an excellent book with a stellar narrator. Do not hesitate to buy - you will not be disappointed.

One of Francis's best

The perceptive insight into people that typified all of Dick Francis's writing, spoiled by mediocre reading. Geoffrey Howard is certainly better than Martin Jarvis, but sadly will never come up to the same level as Simon Prebble or Tony Britton.

My Aunt Knew a Good Mystery

On every visit to her house, I’d find a Dick Francis novel on a sofa or end table. Many years later, now I know why. Besides being a good mystery, this is a good story, with engaging characters populating a plot that deals with more complications than simply “whodunnit?” One of my favorite readers, Geoffrey Howard doesn’t disappoint here, either.

A well written and performed mystery

A typical Francis book, wanted to continue to work through it and figure out who and why. I love his books.

Superb in every respect

This is one of Francis’s best stories and is wonderfully narrated. Geoffrey Howard has a lovely voice and does the book justice.

sigh

I really wish Dick Francis books were not so ripe with misogyny. I quit reading him as a teenager cause of it and this book has it as well. Won't be reading any more and it's too bad as they are fun reads otherwise.

Francis' Wordcraft

Francis does it again; crafting intrigue, human nature and resilience into a story hard to put down. Enjoyed every page.

Clever

The story was clever, action filled, exciting but somewhat dated in attitudes as it was written in 1965. Excellent narration.
